Hi Gents,

Does any one know where I can hire a DTi Gauge and Pump Fitting mount to time up my 2.5 BMW FIP, near to West Devon. I would buy them but as this is something that needs doing once in a blue moon - it they will sit in the tool box gathering dust from then on
Cheers

you can buy it on ebay, around 60 to 70 euro;; I use to recheck every 40 to 50.000 kilometer during my service period , hope this will extented the engine life

Ebay look for VW VE injection pump adaptor. Dti available from same source various prices you should get both for around £35.00. You will also need a flywheel locking pin.

Ebay # 400211393244

Thanks for the replies gents - looks like I am going to be buying the kit.

The full kit is expensive Adaptor and DTI for around £35.00 plus a locking pin can be made from 12mm silver steel for two or three quid. Give me a shout if you want the dimensions, may put them in my how to at top of page.

Thanks Wammers, I have the dimensions (probably from you) from another post.

Do you know of anyone who has tried the "mark the flange and rotate the pump 1.5mm towards the engine" method of tightening upm the chain?
Cheers

That is guessing but some will have done it and got a result. Personally i would do it properly. But it's your choice. Timing is set at TDC firing number one to 0.90mm lift +- 0.02 mm. Or 0.035" lift +- 0.001" with the DTI, last movement always away from engine to take up backlash in pump internals. So if you think you can guess that be my guest. You are not tightening the chain you are moving the pump back to the position in relation to the crank sprocket it was set at before the chain stretched.

I did this and the hot start has slightly improved, I intend to do it a bit more but maybe there is no point? The timing modulation figure did reduce from 70% to 45% on faultmate. Not easy to get definite info on this subject.

Cheers Gents, if loads of folk had done it with total success I would have given it a go, but as it is I reckon its time to buy a DTI Gauge and mount

Doing it that way is hit and miss.

Because.

A. You don't know by how much your chain has stretched.

B. You don't know how much wear (backlash) you have in your pump.

Doing it with the DTI takes all those things into account.

Someone said they had done it and modulation had gone to normal on the MSV. But he could be setting it to a duff number four injector sensor. Unless the pump is static timed with the DTI he would not know that.
