Hoping for some advice please.

My series 3 has been laid up for two years not doing much. Ive gone to start it and Im not getting any spark, checked ignition coil and the resistance values look good, hooked it up to the +ve straight from the battery to the +ve of the coil and still no bang, just removed the HT lead from coil to distributor and it's reading 65K Ohm, I know HT leads are high resistance but does this seem excessive? I dont want to fire the parts cannon just yet, Ive already started with putting a new ignition coil in and no luck.

Just put a spark plug and lead straight into the ignition coil, I have a spark so coil is good. Next step, spark plug on end of lead connected to dizzy.

Just out of curiosity, spark plug lead about 3/4 length of the ignition coil lead is 10k Ohm compared to the 60k Ohm. New leads on order then!

Worth cleaning the points with a file or folded wet/dry paper - they get corroded when out of use and the resistance gets too high to fire the coil.

You’ve got it. New leads. TBH why not do the rest (plugs, condenser, points, rotor arm n dizzy cap. Cost about thirty squids max.

All connected back up on new coil and she runs! I dont know what the issue was but I did replace the connector for the live to the ignition coil so maybe it was just so frayed it wasnt giving enough current to the coil.

On another note, the wiring is horrendous, its been chopped and hacked so much I think its time for a new loom from Autosparks.

I did order a new dizzy cap and rotor arm and had it spare, when I pulled it out, it was for the older type dizzy

The fact that there is a spark doesn't necessarily mean it is a good spark, sometimes a weak spark at tickover will break down under load if the coil is on it's way out. It is usually worth trying a new condenser as well, they are only a few quid.

Also, if the vehicle has been standing for years, it would be well worth getting rid of the petrol in the tank and the carb bowl, and putting some fresh fuel in it. Petrol never lasted well, and the modern stuff is worse.

Yes, good points, I have left the new coil fitted at the moment as it is running quite happily on it.

The fuel was fresh fuel, the petrol I left in the tank had evaporated off. I cleaned out the lift pump filter and gauzes as part of the diagnosis.

All good now!

Excellent. Good result. Look forward to seeing it next week. :)
