Hi all,
I’m restoring an 1982 88” series 3 that I inherited from my grandfather who has had it from new
I stripped the engine without paying much attention to the timing as I thought I would wing it! I had the engine bored as it picked up on 3 cylinders.
Now I am reassembling I have been looking for timing marks etc. I have found a plug on the flywheel housing and a notch in the flywheel which according to internet research should show me when no1 is at tdc. Trouble is my no1 is at tdc when the fly wheel is about 30 degrees before that notch. The crank pulley keway is also not vertical when no1 is at tdc. Is this correct or can have I got something wrong? I can’t really see that I have got anything wrong as the flywheel is located with the dowell on the crank
I should have marked it up but then I thought it would be more fun and educational to do it manually with the dial guage at this stage!

dont worry about the flywheel ,set at tdc and a cam mark with hole in the block

Yea I was thinking that but I was wondering what the correct Lr method for this is.
I guess the best way without taking the head off is to get the valves on the rock for tdc, mark it and then go another revolution for tdc on the firing stroke. Then set the cam gear mark to the bolt hole. Does that sound right?

how do you know were tdc exactly is ifs head is still on, i wouldnt use the valves as tdc setting especially since your talking about setting the timing
how do you know key isnt at 12 at tdc

Agreed, use a dial test indicator to get TDC on 1.
Flywheel notch is before TDC, as the diesel timing pointer window is on the side of the flywheel housing.

I will wizz the head off again then put my own marks on the flywheel. I was just trying to avoid that and was hoping there was a form of a pointer somewhere. I have seen somewhere there is a bracket or pointer that bolts onto the outside of the timing casing on some models but I can’t see that on mine

I think that the key way must be at TDC, if it's a standard series crank. Mine ended up there, though mines a 17H.

Dial gauges are great for spot on measurements but this is a landy and back in the day they were set up by blind Bob the engine tuner at Lode Lane. Don't bother getting the head off. Use something like a screwdriver poked down the spark plug hole of No 1 piston and hand turn the engine until it looks like the piston is at the the top of its travel. Take the rocker cover off and make sure both valves for No 1 are shut. Then make sure the lead for No1 on the dizzy cap is pointing at No1 spark plug. Put the plug back in, put the rocker cover back on and fire it up. Rotate the dizzy slightly till it runs the best. Don't forget to cross your fingers.
