19j smokes on full throttle

hi
i have a 19j in my 110 and when u pull off hard it pumps out balk/gray smoke and dosent pull good uphill its a newish engine with 57000 miles on it after rebuild,was sitting up 4 3 years and the pump had broke on it so replaced it. It starts fine and ticks over fine any ideas on my problem ???

Hi there,

Never use full throtle on a 19J in my opinion. With love and care they'll last for ever but they hate heat and high revs. I guess it smokes simply because on one of these engines you can't pull enough cool air into them to burn all the fuel the pump will put into the engine when you have you're foot flat to the floor.

I fitted an intercooler to mine and not a drop of smoke to be seen.

Also just to let you know before you get a barrage of replies on the subject this is a Discovery message board and not the defender/90 one.

my 19j only lasted 3 months it soon got a disco 200 put in the best thin i did to it

A well maintained and looked after 19j is an ok engine so long as you don't want to go too fast or indulge in too much heavy work like towing big trailers up hills. The one thing they do well is smoke.
