Hello,
I'm hoping some of you might be able to help,
my 1996 Discovery tdi cut out and now wont fire, I don't know much about mechanics but have tinkered in the past and got away with it,

So far I have checked all four injectors and fuel is getting to them
the glow plugs have power getting to them and have never been a problem so far
and yes it has fuel in it I have half a tank

if it helps the day it cut out was very cold, and it died after I got to the top of a hill, its automatic diesel

any help or suggestions would be great
Thanks

I bought it in October and it was serviced then new fuel filter supposedly and to be fair looks newish,
sedimenter wise I have no idea,
it was at first but its slowing down now and have had it linked u to jump leads, it has never turned over quickly mind you but I replaced the battery about a month ago.

Explain "cut out" in more detail.

Did it just stop immediately, and you rolled to a halt?
Did it slow then stop?
Did it jerk?

Etc.

The more information the better.

it was really smooth I didn't even notice until I saw the battery light on the dash I then coasted as near to a layby as I could get (not very close)
when I noticed I popped into neutral (automatic) and tried to start it but to no avail, then tried it a few times , my friend then came and towed me to a safe spot,
didn't notice any difference in speed or jerking.

Clean the earth connections for starters, get a helpful assistant to turn the ignition key whilst you check the fuel solenoid on the injection pump to make sure it's opening

forgot to mention I checked the solenoid did the 'click test' and could hear it clearly moving

EDC? or has it been converted to mechanical FIP? Check engine light on and off after self test?
Im fairly certain its a mechanical FLP I swapped it over from one at a breakers but still not working

also engine light is only on when the key is turned to first position and then goes off when you crank it

did you change the injectors as well - cos the EDC injectors are a much higher pressure - and, IIRC will not work with the mech FIP.

Put some pictures up - worth a thousand words.

Have you checked that the valve gear and injection pump are operating, the timing belt could have jumped or completely broken.
If the belt has jumped there can still be evidence of fuel injection but it will not be injecting at the correct time.
Check also the air induction trunking from the air filter right through to the inlet maifold for any blockages or collapsed flex sections.
Your diesel needs three things to fire up, compression, fuel and air, if any one of these do not occur at the correct time/sequence it will not start.

can I just say thank you all very much for taking the time out to help me out,

im just sorting the photos out now and they will follow shortly

As far as \i'm aware their down near the starter motor ! That may be why it wont turn over very fast ! you say you have fuel to injectors ! sqwert or drible ?

Steve

"FLP" ? do you mean lift pump or injection pump ? - from your pictures, it doesn't look like the FIP has been changed - and the one that is there is an EDC one.
I think I mean lift pump then sorry
like I said im not 100% sure what im looking at half the time
what am I meant to be looking at then lol
