ive got a smell of petrol from the filler and tank area, been under the car and the tank has fuel on it as if its leaking from the top, theres no leaks when its parked up with the engine running, got home from work last night and parked on the drive went back out to check after 10 mins and there was a small amount of petrol on the drive it seemed to be running down the tank and dripping, anyone else had this problem or can shed any light on it.

i know the p38 has its problems and can be a pain but i think its worth it.

Unlikely to be the tank as it's plastic
My money would be on one of the feed/return pipes where they enter the tank
Not sure if there is an access point in the floor of P38's above the tank but I'm pretty sure you can see said pipes if you take out the plastic wheel arch liners

I agree with v8 kenny i had exactly what you describe it was the metal pipes on the sender / pump that were corroded, but the other pipes that are jointed at and by the fuel filter were siezed solid and had to be changed too. The only way to get to it to replace it is to drop the tank as there is no access panels in the floor.
Hope this helps

When i replaced mine i got all the parts from my local indi parts supplier but make shure you get new olives for the connections of the pipes to the pump. To replace the unit you will have to remove the plastic arch from under the wheel arch and disconnect the filler pipe to the tank. Then disconnect the fuel lines from by the filter (make shure to catch any petrol). With the car in the air on stands or ramps, undo the 2 straps that hold the tank in place, i used a trolley jack under the tank to take the weight and to lower it down. Disconnect the electrical plug, Pull the tank from under the car and replace the sender and pipes, replace the tank in the reverse order. It took me about 2 1/2 hours start to finish.
Hope this helps and good luck

a bit of a update,im ready to drop the tank but i cant separate the delivery line from the fuel filter and the return line wont separate due to rust, the fittings are starting to strip,im thinking of cutting the lines and repairing with rubber hose but if this is possible should i cut them after the filter, spoken to the guy at island 4x4 and he thinks the fuel pipes are stealer part only

im going to replace the fuel filter so should i get the same one or is there a pushfit one i can replace it with.

I got my fuel lines from my local independant suppliers but as i remember the did have land rover stickers on them so they may be original only. personally i would stick with the proper fuel lines they are shaped to fit so fitting time will be reduced and your car is the same year as mine so they have lasted 13 years i dont think that is too bad, the other thing is if you do offroad it the metal pipes will bend first if they get hit where rubber ones could get cut.

got it stripped its the return line into the tank on the top of the fuel pump itself so i need the delivery and return lines and a new fuel pump:(,now to find the cheapest place to source one.

anyone point me in the right direction.

That sounds about right
are they supplying the small olives to fit the pipes to the pump ?, (they fit like a water compression joint )
I`me glad your getting it sorted
