1988 90 - Rear Crossmember Steel Thickness

Does anyone know off-hand how thick the steel is on the rear cross-member?

Gotta repair a couple of patches, and might pop to a fabrication shop for some scraps on the way home from work :)

Ok, I think the original thickness is 2mm, so I'm going to go with that.

When welding, do you just disconnect the battery, and leave the alternator connected? I wonder if it's a good thing to leave the alternator earthed or not.
 
The original thickness is 2mm.... I just had a 3mm heavy duty rear xmember fitted to replace the original 2mm on my 1994 Defender. I know jack sh*t about welding but from previous posts I have read.... if using a MIG, disconnect the ECUs, alternator and battery to avoid damage. Maybe a wiser member will confirm? Don't want you to damage you pride and joy.

well, I'll be using my stick welder most likely, although I do have a MIG :) I'll disconnect the alternator. It's just that there are arguments about whether its better to leave it plugged in, but I'll disconnect, and might even remove it from the vehicle, as I need to modify the hole for the tensioner bolt anyway :)
 
Don't know about ECU's but we just disconnected the batteries on the farm. You only need to disconnect one cable though and I can't for the life of me remember.
