I have a 1985 classic V8 on SU's
She will not start, will turn over but not fire, if i take a plug out they are dry.

I took the fuel line off the carb turned on the ignition but fuel doesnt flow,
Im sure these have an electric fuel pump, does anyone know where
the fuse or relay is for the pump please

thanks

Woody

Hi Woody
I am sure that the early v8's (talking sd1) have a three wire oil pressure switch, once the oil pressure comes up it switches on the fuel pump, but there is an override when the key is turned and i think there is another wire attached to the starter for this perpose.

So if you find the switch and short across the two spades that are parellel to each other this should fire up the fuel pump (for testing only).

fuel pump it infront of the passenger side rear wheel if its the facet type like my 72 rrc. maybe on ones as late as yours its an in tank pump?

The fuel pump is in the tank, and there is no hole in the boot floor until later models, so the only access is by dropping the tank (unless you are brave and fancy cutting a hole in the floor yourself, right above the fuel lines!)

See pics attached.

well this is good for me to know as when I have the back end of min in bits next month I was thinking of fitting a later tank with an in tank pump to run my SU's off, can ayone think why I shouldnt?

I will cut an access panel in the boot floor before I put the tank back lol.

Yep, the access panels came in with the '91 facelift so before that the pump is in the tank and the sender unti is seperate, out on the side of the tank. After that the sender is on the pump in the tank - worth bearing in mind fett! :)

the access panel was earlier than that bud , I have one on my 1990 for a start :p

I know the tank will be different , I was gonna get the one with the sender in the side and the pump on top like my 1990 one but then fit a carb pump instead of an EFI one. They have the bits at padwanks. I just dont like the idea of the facet pumps being so low catching all the crap when laning!
