170 chassis? - confused as to the legality issues

ok so if i wanted a 170 chassis, and got it done by a proffesional chassis company, whats the crack with the DVLA?

I am a bit confused about it as the interwebs flooded with so much crap.

Does modifying the chassis length immediately make it a Q plate? Or is there a way of retaining the original plate.
Also, is there any advantage in using a 3 door van / csw type?

Not sure, but it will need a Single Vehicle Check (or whatever it is called) to declare the vehicle and workmanship is safe and correct I would imagine.
