Hey guys,

I've just driven from London to Manchester and have been concerned about my mpg

My fears were confirmed when I only managed 168 miles for half a tank!

In all fairness my car is modified with a lift, roof rack and rock sliders as per pic but 15mpg on a motorway............please.

Is there anything that could be causing this?

V8 or Td5?

To be fair, you could hardly design anything for more wind resistance than that! :D

Going to be quite expensive in fuel at speeds over 60mph.

Just out of interest, how fast were you going?

As above.

If its a V8, then that's not too bad, but if a TD5, then the first thing I would be doing is taking your radiator and intercooler blockers off - the IC needs air flow to work.....

Any fault codes - air cleaner clean ? brakes binding and all the usual suspects...

Even for a V8 over distance 15mpg is poor. My 4.6 will do 20-22mpg on a good run.

And a 3.5 carb 90 will do 19mpg.

Lots of potential reasons could cause low mpg. But a lot more detail is required to even try to diagnose.

I have a bog standard TD5 Discovery with the 18" tyres.
Only mod is that the EGR has been removed.
I change the air filter every 3 months (use cheapo britpart ones) and on average usually get over 30 mpg.
If I drive at 60mph but not over I can manage around the 33-35 mpg

As above but mine still has the EGR, although the actuation pipes are blanked off.
If you cruise much above 65 it will drop to around 30MPG

how much stop and go driving was there? were you able to maintain a steady speed of say 50-55 mph. Auto or manual transmission? Maybe your right foot is to heavy and you are trying to do 10 second 1/4 miles

I get about 18mpg out of a 3.9 Auto even towing my cattle trailer.
56mph sitting with the trucks in the inside lane. Doesn't shake the animals up too much either.
Pootling around local mileage without the trailer about 22 to the gallon,

That is similar to folk I know with Td5 defender.

How did you work out the MPG?

Cheers

That has often been a cause of confusion as well, especially if landrover fool gauges are involved! :D

15mpg? Glad I'm not the only one unable to get these 30mpg-ish figures! Mine gets used for local (to work, 14m round trip with some traffic) and towing a horse box, so not ideal conditions.Even so, I'd expect to be getting about 25-28mpg rather than the 22ish I usually get on either of the two Td5 autos we've had. Both were/are bog standard with EGR intact and road biased tyres.

I'm interested to see what the possible reasons there are for this wide range of results.

Mine's auto but still get high 20s on what town driving I do, nearer mid 30s on a run so it averages out around 30mpg depending on the driving mix which I'm happy with.
Don't forget it's all uphill from London to Manchester.

No fault codes apart from an intermittent SRS light.

Mine has been returning 23 miles to the gallon towing, and about 28 miles on the motorway and country roads, that's a bog standard nothing changed, be interesting to find out why yours is so low.

Calculating on half a tank is never going to give you an accurate figure. You need to do full to full and keep doing it. I've done mine every fill for the 50,000 miles I've had it and overall mpg is 22.5. Towing a caravan perhaps 1/4 of the time; always driving at speed limits; not hanging about. It's not brilliant but I'm happy with it.
