Hi - the aux belt is looking a bit ropy on the Ninety, been trying to find a replacement and can't find a part number to ask for anywhere. It's a 2.5 NA but a 14J, can't find enough info on them to figure out (without buying one and just having a go) whether the auxiliary belt is the same as a 12J or not - I'm assuming not as obviously that would be too easy! Anyone know off the top of their heads? I've searched but Google called and asked if I can stop harassing their servers, because they just don't have the info...

I have considered just taking it off, measuring it and asking for the nearest thing but that sounds like a bit of a recipe for disaster as it's starting to slip so probably a bit stretched.

Thanks both ;) Yes as mentioned I'm looking for the auxiliary belt!
The size should be decipherable from the number on the belt if it's readable.

Have you tried searching for the Freight Rover 300 Series part number?
I have indeed tried searching and can't find any reference anywhere, or any version thereof (e.g. DAF 300, LDV 300, etc etc) - unusual these days not to find anything from a few variations of Google keywords! I did have a good look to see if it was written on the belt but no sign whatsoever that there was ever any writing on it at all, much less anything decipherable. Bit annoying as that would have been the easy answer, definitely!

I'd go for measuring then if nobodies got a definitive answer, they're not expensive and easy to refit so it's not a disaster if you need to get a couple to get it right.

Yes I expect that's what I'll end up doing, must be a Gates one or similar that'll fit!

You used to be able to walk into Halfords and rummage through for the size you wanted but the last time I tried that they refused without a reg number which is useless on a non standard set up

A local indie motor factor should be able to think past a computer system and look up sizes.

You'd hope so wouldn't you! I'm not holding out much hope on that side, but a bit more searching through the history of the Sherpa/Freight Rover/LDV variants suggests that the Gates belt 6221MC, as shown here, is the most likely culprit even though strictly speaking the 14J wasn't a Sherpa engine. And given the lack of any definitive answer, I'll have a string and micrometer measure tomorrow to see if those measurements make sense! It's only £7 after all so worth a try if it seems it'll fit ;)

Yes that's what I found at first too. And I can find even less about FX4 parts than about Sherpa/300 parts ...

But on the basis that it seems odd they'd have used different belts for the FX4 but exactly the same one for every other version of the pre300TDI 2.5L, and given I can't think of anywhere else to look, I'm going to give the part listed above a go and see what happens anyway! Fingers crossed.

Huh, so not the right belt then. Significantly too small even with the alternator adjusted right up close. Ordered a selection of belts at various sizes to see which one works the closest... Old one's finally snapped so Sunny's out of commission til I get it sorted.

Have had a good couple days mucking around on various repairs, one of which was the glow plugs and another sorting out a belt that'd work. Have gone for a significantly longer one than the 6221MC I'd expected - the original belt on this engine was a tiny bit longer but a lot skinnier (6mm wide instead of 10mm) and obviously that alters the belt size needed as well. Could I find a 6mm belt anywhere? Nope. Anyway. Because of the size difference, the alternator adjustment bracket was about a 1/2" too short, so made up another one. Happy with it now, has 90deg slack like I was looking for, doesn't vibrate, we'll see how long it lasts!
Glow plugs when removed were a real eye opener. Doesn't look like they'd ever been done, except one which wasn't even the same size. Look at these!

Unsurprised. The biggest problem with old landrovers is often the previous owners. :(

I would get a set of quality glows, Denso or similar. The cheapies are not always great.

Exactly what I got ;) Starting up just to test it out no great cloud of smoke, only needed a few seconds, fantastic result. Love those jobs that work well the first time, so satisfying!
