110 Sailsbury into a 90..

I am considering putting a 110 sailsbury rear axle into my 90 as a cheaper way of making the rear stronger. Im running 35 inch tyres and ive just blew my 10 spline rear diff, i can imagine its the first of many, i dont really have the money to get strenghened shafts and lockers.

So far i know its heavier, i know i loose some clearance.

Are the shafts stronger?

If i get it from a 110 will the ratios be right?

Can i still use my propshaft, ive got about 20 mm which can be compressed.

The ratio should be the same

they are a bit lower.

You will need the front prop shaft off a RR if i remember, someone on here did it a while back and said this.

Oh yeah, youll need to modify the spring mounts cos 110 springs are bigger.

What are you doing to break diffs?

Done it my 90 has a drum braked salisbury, I used an L reg Range Rover Tdi front Propshaft for the rear. will need to change the spring cups for your 90 ones (slightly smaller dia). Make sure you get a good salisbury. the shafts are super storng compared to Rover items but the main advantage is the 4 pin diff and if you did ever manage to break a shaft you can simply take out both shafts and punch the broken bit out with a broom handle. Remember that If a Diff was to get damaged, without a spreader you will be knackared I managed to get one now and then and am halfway to making one. Jai

Cheers for the replies. Excuse my ignorance but whats a spreader that your on about? What do you reckong i should be paying for a decent axle complete? And i guess it has to be the tdi rangie istead of the V8 ? Dam!

Oh and i was powering up a gully in a quarry in order to blow my diff and twist the shafts!

a rover diff is supported by bolting to the casing off the diff case, a salisbury is supported in the diff by 2 bearings that are pre loaded by the axle case, so to remove the diff assembly you have to remove the 2 bearing caps and stretch the axle casing apart very slightly using a spreader to get the diff out and in a salisbury without the correct pre loading will be noisey Jai

Putting one into a 90 is quite easy, but it might require 2 people.
First you open the rear door, then flip the front passenger seat down. Lift the axle and slide it in over the bulkhead and passenger side. Close the door.

If you want to put it actually on the vehicle, it's probably a wee bit more complicated...
