110 hard top to soft top?

So I'm selling my car and have wanted a defender since I was young (ended up with a golf initially, cheaper insurance). I quite like the idea of a 110 soft top for the summer but being able to put a hard top back on in the winter and for outside the house as I live in central london for insurance, alarm and general comfort.

Budget for 110 about £4-5k and I was thinking a 300tdi with about 60k miles as TD5's look expensive and I have heard good things about the 300's. Put a small roll hoop that could fit under the hard top behind front seats and possibly at the back door for rear passengers who would sit on some rear benches.

So I'm basically trying to find out if this is do-able without going mad with budget and how much it would roughly cost to do?

New to the forum, sorry if this sounds like a newbie question.

If you get a defender 300tdi for £4-5k with only 60k on the clock you've made history. Either that or you've just bought a completely rotten vehicle that's been used on a farm or quarry it's entire life and never seen tarmac.

So what would be more realistic for that budget, and what is the engine life roughly mileage wise?

Finding one with mileage that low will be extremely difficult. The 300tdi defender is pretty much the most sought after engine/vehicle combo you can get. Being realsistic you should be considering any vehicle with mileage 180k or under.

A 300tdi should be good for 250k-300k if properly maintained.

you can get a 300 on that budget but unlikely with that low mileage. a tdi engine can easily do 250000 miles. then rebore it n start again!
