Hi, it would be great to get some info from 101 fans or owners :)

Basically i have been looking to buy a good 'base vehicle' next year to use as a 4x4 tourer (UK use) and general titting around off road. Something with character and a bit of room for me and the dogs, which i can work on and renovate over time. It's only really for secondary use, and i have always liked the 101's body/size. Obviously it's an old motor, with leaf springs and drum brakes etc, but those kind of things can be upgraded with a bit of work, if desired down the line.

What can't really be changed is the chassis. The 101 basically has a flat ladder chassis, while the 110 has a bit of a curve to it. Is that curve for the axle? Would i be right in thinking the 101 has so much ground clearance it just isn't needed?

Also, other than bulkheads and outriggers (which can be replaced), is the 101 chassis prone to bad rust? Or are they usually serviceable? I might be able to get a new one made but it's gonna a be a one off job by the looks of it, so would probably cost, it would be good to delay that for as long as possible

Engine wise, some 101's are fitted with a diesel conversion, which is probably the logical option. The other option would be the rover v8 with lpg and a RR classic overdrive (if available). I don't know if they can take a 5 speed box. Anyhow, just how bad are the rover v8's in terms of speed and MPG (with or without LPG)? And are the older lumps reliable enough to be used for UK touring? I'm not phased by the older technology so long as it is a robust engine.

Cheers

Try these http://www.101club.org/forums/

I thought the 101 had the same chassis as a 109 or 110, then metalwork to support the load bed makes it appear flat from above.

Ahh cool, the images i have looked at all view from above and are mostly part stripped so don't show much. Nice one. I'm kinda surprised at how much steel is there given the weight of a GS..

In which case they probably won't still have a decent chassis i guess? There looks to be a lot of bits to catch and trap mud.. I spoke to a company that wasn't closed off to making a new one, but they seem to not be made available 'off the self' anywhere. Not the end of the world though.

Cheers for that pic

Guys. Your getting yourself mixed up here. That 3D diagram isn't a 101, it's a Series 2a forward control. However you are correct that a FC S2a/b does have the same chassis. A 101 is a totally different vehicle. Take yourself over to the 101 part of the forum (military /101). To my knowledge 101 bulkheads are just as or even more difficult to get hold of new than Series bulkheads. Nor am I aware of upgrades to the suspension. The off-road capabilities of a 101 in standard spec are superb. The combination of power v axle weight is perfect. The V8 may be long in the tooth but it's a superb engine. Most engine conversion are to diesel.

I was just looking at that pic and a 101 photo on my mobile and thinking something was amiss.

Apparently you can take the spring cups off another land rover model, weld em to the 101 chassis and swap the axles to suit (which would also give you discs), or add fittings to the current axles if you wanna keep the stronger axles. I can't remember which model the parts where from, i'd have to google it.

I meant to say x members, not bulkhead. My mistake. These seem to be the chassis parts available: http://shop.101parts.co.uk/index.php?id_category=4&controller=category

So, is the 101 a kinda flat ladder chassis? Or something like the forward control above?

And with the v8, is it so bad to fuel it would make it a no go for long distnace, or just so bad it becomes a running (but bearable) joke..? They sound so good..

EDIT: What is articulation like with the leaf springs? Sorry for all the q's
