I have just replaced all the cylinders and linings on my 88, now i have the same old problem getting a good pedal. now the in the dim and distant past i was told that if a pedal pumps up the i neaded ajusting, and if not the blead it. i have had this befor over the years and decided to get rid of all the mith and old wives tales and have a good look. so is have just cut a window in the side of a spare drum so i could see what was going on.
now then, it seems that when you bleed with the adjuster of as you should the shouse move slightly alowing air to be trapped, you need to hold the shoes right back. the other thing was that the linnings do not fit the drum, they only fit at the cylinder end, at the fixt end there is about 40 thou gap, this will get better as the linnings bed in, but to start with will meen a bad pedal and poor brakes, the fixt steady needs to be ajustable. i am going to look and see if it will move on its mounting. but any other sujestions would be wellcombe

Please confirm that we are talking about 10" brakes? Thats single leading shoes on front, same as rear.

With 11" brakes (twin leading shoes on front) it is necessary to back off the adjusters, let pistons back into the cylinders, to minimise the ait trapped above the bled/outlet port.

If your bleed nipple is open, the shoes should not move when pedal is pressed. But if you have single leading shoes it shouldn't matter anyway, as any air comes out the top. Is the trailing shoe falling away from the drum? It shouldn't ..... unless spring is in wrong place.
