good morning all,

I have a 04 freelander 1 that needs some love.

The plan is for it to be search and rescue car for the charity I work with so we have lots planned for it BUT not until we cure the smoke issue.

You only get the black smoke when you accelerate.

It had a hole in the intercooler hose but I've changed this. Today I will clean the egr valve and air instake manifold out as these are really dirty.

But what would you guys suggest the next steps are to solve the issue so I can get on with the fun stuff that needs doing. Wont be doing any of that yet just incase its something big like the turbo gone.

Thanks for your help

Black smoke from a diesel is down to too much fuel (or not enough air). If it's just a puff on initial acceleration then it could just be down to turbo lag or leaks

Its more of a constant smoke when my foot is on the accelerator. Its not a huge amount of smoke though.

I've just taken the intake off and it looks like this any ideas on how to clean?

My guess would be the head needs to come off for a proper clean, but I'm sure a diesel expert will be asking soon with a better method. That amount of buildup could affect the ebony of air getting to the cylinders, causing rich running and black smoke.
It could also be a previous owner has tweaked the FIP thinking they will get more power

Just scrape out the thick goop while holding a vacuum cleaner nozzle in the port. This all that's open to you, unless you want to strip the engine down, which isn't worth doing, as scrapping the worst of it out, will be effective enough. ;)

The black gunk in the ports forget it will eventually be eaten up by the engine, don't poke it into the ports, etc, do as you say you are going to do, clean the manifold out properly, oven foam, spray helps, leave it to do its work then jet wash the manifold out, make sure you remove al the red seals, and most important the MAP sensor before cleaning, it can be found on the side of the manifold held in by a 10mm bolt.

Clean the EGR out with an old tooth brush and some Swarfega, wipe out with a rag then clean again with carb cleaner, make sure intercooler hoses are good and secure, spary the turbo boost sensor with carb cleaner its inside the alloy part in the intercooler top hose.
Change the PCV filter, air filter, it should then be ok.

If not then it could be over fuelling, check to see if it is fitted with a synergy and its set at the right number.

scrape out any big deposits
