I have purchased an 02 Defender and wish to service the Engine.
I have always serviced my own vehicles but never owned a diesel engine before so am in new teritory.
I can not find any information in the Rover handbook about the Engine. Landrover Agents are not helpful and Haynes manual only goes to 1995. I don't believe the garage I purchased from did more than an Oil change (over filled) and tick the boxes on the job sheet so i need to do the service again myself for my peace of mind.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Use Ultra high performance 5W30 Diesel oil 20 QUID PER 5L (i managed to get Land Rover's own oil from Smith & allen in Darlington) I think about 9 litres of oil. The oil filter is under the Turbo & the spinner filter is at the left side of the Turbo it has a domed top with two nuts either side. Also the EGR exhaust gas reserculation pipe that comes of the exhaust manifold runs across the front of the engine & into the air intake undo this where it goes onto the exhaust manifold & BLANK THE *ASTARD OFF!!!!!!!!!! they don't need to be breating old fumes & this EGR can block the manifold with coke. Also get it super chipped it has unleashed my 2002 TD5 with more power torque & is better on fuel!
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BIG ENOUGH CONTAINER TO DRAIN INTO AS IT IS 9L OF WAIST!

You don't absolutely NEED to blank off the EGR system, though we often remove the pipe altogether and blank it off as you say. Just find the electrical connection to the EGR and unplug it. Find the vacuum pipe from the inlet to the EGR and shove something down the pipe. Voila! ps the engine takes 7.2l of oil if both filters are changed. The centrifugal should be done every oil change and the spin-on only every 32k miles. You should really also change the Diesel filter in the RR wheel arch. And the air filter at the same time. Get a grease gun and grease the prop shafts, 3 nipples on each shaft. This is especially important for the front ones which get a harder life than the rear. Even if you buy all the tools you will save money over a dealer service.

The haynes manual is fine except for the engine, the rest is the same. The LR TD5 manual is rubbish, but you can download one if you want. See Todd (Tuko) on the landroveraddict forum for the address.
