steering question

Hi, ive just been driving a polo and when i go over bumps the steering wheel isnt thrown around all over the place like it is on my 90. Id kinda got used to it and thort it was the norm. are they all like this? or has somthin like the steering damper gone? cheers

Yeah sounds like the damper - does it respond instantly when you turn it? i.e. if your going along fast and you move the wheel just a little the vehicle steers?

err yer think so perhaps a slight delay but not much. never really goes fast

swivels may need adjusting.

its got wide wheels on it if that makes any difference

basically when i hit a bump it steers its self and i have to fight with the steering wheel to keep it straight

Could be yer steering damper knackered they do have a habit of rotting away. Yer swivel preloads could be out. Or have you tried adjusting yer tyre pressures?

i havnt as only just really realised how much its doing it! Will hav a look at steering damper for any signs of corrosion. how can u tell if swivel preloads r out?

No there is some free movement in the steering wheel. But only when going fast. When slow it makes it turn, al be it not very much.
