im usually on the rangerover section as I have a p38 wich iv'e had for last 5 years and love it ,:):):), I was toying with the idea of buying a defender as most of the one's ive seen look pretty good and would be useful for me to do a bit of adventuring and as a work horse !!!!!
questions .
a) which to choose 110 or 90
b) type etc ???? probably daft question " but I don't know anything about any of them !!!!;);)

c) why are they so so many defenders getting stolen ????? :(:(:(

e) what to look for ( obvious ringers etc ???:eek:
f) would really like to chat with someone who knows all about them .
g) reliability
h) anti theft suggestions "are they any inbuilt ????:confused::confused:

As James says really....

Depends what you want. A rugged people carrier then a 110 CSW or the ultimate off road toy a 90. All sorts of variations inbetween.

How many people do you want to carry and for how far? Towing? Load space?

Being a P38 owner you're unlikely to be worried by the electrics on a Td5 and though Tdis are more Luddite friendly Td5s have proved to be a solid power unit and probably easier to find a good unabused example.

Security is frankly hopeless but according to Rattys long running poll on stolen and attempted thefts a full disklok on the steering wheel and turned to lock is the best single addition to prevent and a tracker is the best hope of getting it back.

Hey Mozz...

As you know I am a long term Range Rover sufferer...I mean owner :D:D:D and if you have followed my threads, the P38 has been given its last rites as the oil pressure issue is terminal and the state of the rocker space after I took the covers off show that the previous owners were less than useless with oil changes and maintenance....but hey, I only paid £750 for it and it has given me 9 months of motoring!

She runs well and pulls like a train, but at idle she loses oil pressure, done all the common things, main bearings shells, big end bearing shells, brand new front cover with oil pump etc, have bought new cam, rockers, shafts, springs, pedestals, etc etc etc.....but it think it is not worth fitting another £300-400 pounds of stuff and it might not solve it!

So we decided to get Anna (my long time girlfriend - almost 15 years together, known her for over 18 years) her dream car.....a Defender 90 Pick Up with a lift and big arse tyres! So I have the L322 and she has the Defender.

Now, the more observant and knowledgeable will know it is not a Defender 90 but a Land Rover Ninety as they were known in the eighties before the Disco came along and they changed the name in '91 ish to Defender 90 and 110 (and 130).

Fitted with the 200Tdi engine out of a Discovery, a newer rear axle from the Td5 model as this was fitted with disc brakes. She has been given a 2" lift with larger tyres, dislocating rear springs....

The choice is endless with these things as you are unlikely to find two the same as they are well suited to modification and changing of components.

My biggest fear with the 'Defender' (as I will continue to refer to it as, as it makes it easier to identify) is theft.....I live in a fairly alright/decent area....but in January 2011 some light fingered Mary stole my '93 Classic Range Rover from out the back and the Police found it buried up to the chassis rails in mud, coupled to a large 7.5 metre trailer loaded up with riding gear and boots.....

It seems they had decided to steal my Range Rover and use it to steal a load of riding gear, only to make a mistake and get her bogged down while trying to escape the police....

Now, fine steal my Range Rover...but here is the kick in the teeth, once they abandoned it, they torched it....making it a total write off....I was heart broken as it was a great Range Rover and never let me down! Best one I have had reliability-wise.

So anywho.....I am in fear of the same thing happening to the Defender, so I have been looking around at a few things, and I have decided on the disc-lok thingy (just got to decide if to keep the original steering wheel or fit a smaller one, as this will have a bearing on size of Disc-lok to buy) and also the Xeng Pedal box/lock...as this looks like a really neat idea! She is currently fitted with a 'James Bond' super secret battery isolation key thingy.

I have also seen some sliding bars that will fit over the doors to act as dead bolts, which seem good too!!!

All that combined with set me back around £440 (£100 Disc-Lok, £160 Xeng and £180 Locking Bars) but will be well worth it.

Was it a practical choice, no.....was it worth it, yes....it is a great vehicle to drive and the lack of electrical complexity is a boon.....heck I re-wired the wipers the other day as they were non-functioning....try doing that in the L322..!!!

Make an informed choice and go for it!

Drive a few and see what you think!

Good luck Mozz,

BB is Ryder still active on here, I don't recall him posting lately.

Erm really.?! I've searched unsuccessfully to try and find his user account to PM him regarding fitting a suitable tracking device.

You've hidden it haven't you.?!

He answered some VMs a couple of days ago :)

Back to concerns about Landy theft, it's not just Fenders.

I read an article last week that said 10% of all stolen vehicles in London were Rangies
I don't know why that is less visible or heard about than tratter thefts, maybe it's just less likely to be posted on a forum.

HA! I was going to say 110 every time - more space and less trendy so it follows a 110 will be lower on the tealeaves wish/nick list. Watch both on Ebay, you'll notice 90's sell quicker, and for more, than 110's - just my opinion. Another thought, yes that 90 looks REALLY nice, and things that are shiny and look REALLY nice are very attractive to thieves [who are basically not grown ups otherwise they'd not to steal...................] So my advice was get a good, solid but tatty 110 - keep it good and solid and............... tatty. If you can consider such a plan after a shiny RR! Good luck...............

owning a 90 means you sleep with 1 eye open and the bat near by, in times of an unwanted visiter around your trater you need to also be prepared to run across the lawn in nothing but your birthday suite equipped with your bat...

Other than that, simple to fix, good fun to own, parts are fairly cheap and you'll love it more than a rangie I'm sure :)
