Hi, I've just bought my first P38 Diesel a week ago.

I've had it sat on my drive for a week and this weekend I've been out to fit parking sensors to it, when I was finished I attempted to start the vehicle and was hit by an array of error messages and a none starting engine?

also while I was looking at how I get to the thermostat I noticed the A/C belt missing?? The pump/condenser pulley wheel turns, but feels like it's come free from the pump internals? is it new pump time?

This is my first P38 and having looked around on the internet I'm wondering if I should of bought 1

The A/C pump pulley will turn freely until the A/C is turned on then if there is refrigerant in the system the clutch will engage the pump. I bet there's no belt on there because the condenser radiator has a leak in it.
As for non starting if you had a flat battery you will probably have to enter the EKA code if you have it then if it does start then you have to set windows.look in the handbook for entering code.
Also if you post where you are located there may be someone close who could help you out.

Can I suggest that you put some sort of location in your details. You're going to feel a right **** if there's somebody very local to you who's done it all before and is willing to help - for the usual fee - you won't get away with cheapo biscuits on here, we're Rangie owners, chocolate covered at least.

Oh and welcome.

Thanks for the replies

Been down to Costco and they don't sell a battery big enough

Thanks for the info on the A/C pump

I'm in St Helens btw

Battery megastore on line MF31-1000 Alphaline, it's the biggest battery that will fit, about £98, 4 year guarantee.
Fitting electrical extras to the P38 is a bit like playing Russian Roulette if you don't know anything about the P38 electronics.
Low battery voltage will cause havoc with the many ECU's:eek:

Isn't it about time we had this in the 'how to' section? Something like, how to start a Range Rover. Preferably before DATA's fingers start bleeding.

:D

Check your RF receiver, if it's the original it effectively causes the battery to drain.

OK - so I'm lost now?? What is this? where is this? how do I see if it's new? replaced?

and I presume you guys have all worked out a way of preventing it draining the battery??

I don't mean this nastily but at the top of each section there is an internal search function, not the Google one, an internal search engine. If you can get into this there is SO MUCH information that you'll honestly have trouble believing your eyes.

Try 'RF RECEIVER' as your first attempt.

OK - update

I've removed the RF unit and have opened it up and have determined I have the "Interim" version? So I need to dig in my pockets and buy a YWY500170 tomorrow? along with a new battery? or should I attempt to deep cycle charge the one that's on it?

I presume the vehicle isn't going to be too happy about my disconnecting the battery for 24-48 hours

Dogsbody - thank for the info no offence taken - I couldn't search in the beginning as I had no clue where to start

Thank you all for the info - and no doubt I'll be asking further questions the longer I own my P38

As I said, I didn't mean it nastily, it's just that most topics have been done and in great detail. Those of us who have been here for a while and know this might not give such an in-depth reply as you can find in the history.

Don't that EVER stop you asking questions, it's certainly how I learned.

Your car will operate without an RF unit, it just means that you'll have to be close to the rear right window when you operate the remote. Funnily enough that's roughly where I am when I'm about to open the driver's door! So leave that for the moment, especially if money is tight.

Unless you need the car desperately try the battery you've got. If it's just been run down then there's no reason why it shouldn't come back up again. OK it might never be wonderful but again why not hold off on the expenditure until either you have to, or the car is running.

(I'll bet that you never guessed that I was a Scot)

Looking to the future where I do recommend that you spend a little money is with DATATEK. He will supply you a disc with the software for the suspension AND the connection lead for your computer AND he burns a complete workshop manual (RAVE) onto the disc. All at a lot less than you'll pay en ebay.

Oh and a freebie, rare on a P38 I know. With your battery issues, if you haven't already got it, get your EKA code. This is the Emergency Key Acess code and you might need it if your battery is flat or if you remove it. Some main dealers will give it over the phone, some need to see the V5 and even other ID but they should all give it out for free.

To remove the battery correctly you should loosen but not remove the negative lead then switch the ignition on and off. Then disconnect the battery within 17 seconds. When re-connecting connect the positive first and try to connect the negative without creating a spark.

Thanks again!

I will deff be contacting datatek for software and cable as my suspension is higher at the front on all modes

I managed to find a torrent just now with the workshop manual

Did mine a few days ago, will post pictures and stuff tomorrow morning unless someone beats me to it. Another one that should be in the 'how to' section me thinks

Do NOT do that if your P38 has satnav fitted. It will break it.
