Hi,
My TD4 is in a local LR garage to get a faulty fuel pump replaced, under warranty, the garage has said the fuel filter needs replaced to, at my expense.

Can someone tell tell me if this is correct? Where is the fuel filter in the supply line? Is it before the inlet to the pump?

I just get the feeling that the garage are fishing for more work!

whether the fuel filter needs replacing, is really down to when it was last changed???, but being as your fuel pump is being replaced, id change the filter aswell personally, because the filter sits right next to it, the whole assembly has to come out anyway to replace the pump:cool:

britpart are alright but you pay for what you get if you want genuine and last longer pay abit extra if you want cheap and cheerful and not too sure how long it will last go with britpart

ok, and there was me thinking there was a real difrence:doh:, i could understand this "dont use britpart" on a part that you dont change that reguarly or for a few extra quid you might aswell buy genuine etc, but on a filter, a part that really should be changed on a regular basis etc, i dont think it makes much odds, for arguments sake i can buy a genuine landrover oil filter from my local stealer for x amount, and i can also buy the same filter from my local motor factors for alot less, but doesnt come in a genuine landy box, but when you examine the filter there both stamped with the name "mahle", so they obviously come from the same manufacturer/supplier, just packaged difrently, but does this mean "motor-factor filter" is sub-standard and wont last???, but i spose its personal preference:cool:

If they are only asking for the cost of the filter then fair enough.
If they are wanting you to pay for labour then i think they are just trying to recover the cost for replacing the pump since both items would normally be removed together anyway.

The fuel filter change interval is 60k miles.

Agree with Chaser, if they are taking it off they may as well replace it as part of good practice, it is only reasonable that they ask for you to pay for it. it is filtering your fuel so you would use a Genuine part, just to contradict myself i also agree with Caravan Doctor in that they are probably made in the same factory...

My TD4 had the 5 year service carried out only 3000 miles ago, although only 38K on the clock and the filter was replaced then, that is why I questioned the garage and to why they had to replace it? They said the filter could be contaminated if the pump has broken up, that is why I wondered if the filter was before or after the pump? Does the filter filter the diesel before it gets to the pump? If so then if the pump has broken down the debris should not go 'back' to the filter?

one of the reason to also use genuine is down to size :) when i changed mine the filter i took out was a right swine to get out, in fact who ever put it in used a piece of wood to hammer it in when i got it out it was slightly bigger around than the orginal so thats why i would use orginal and the problem with britpart is well documented here so there no smoke without fire

Filter is after the pump as I recall.

Local garage did mine when fuel pump died at 96K. Am surprised yours died at 38k though! Its recommended to be done either way.

However, if the pump has mafunctioned earlier than the norm, I'd argue that its down to the manufacturer to pay.

the britpart one and the genuine one are identical in every way, the reason i know is because its a britpart one im using at the moment and they are both a tight fit(helps to grease it up when re-fitting), and i will also say i have had no problems atall, but mine wont be in there long enough for me to worry about it, i change it every service, admitedly britpart have had "quality" issues, but when people say "its well documented on here" that may be true, but i always think part of it may be correct and the other half is just peeps jumping on the band wagon scare mongerin:doh:

I dont want this to sound like im defendin britpart 100%, but at the same time, sometimes it makes more sense "moneywise" to use other suppliers/brands, but everyones difrent:D

Yes the filter is after the pump, if the garage think the pump has broken down and bits of it have got into the fliter then I would be pushing them to include this as part of the warranty as the damage to the filter was caused by the faulty pump.
