Alls ended well. It was just seized with dirt :doh:, soaked it all in penetrating fluid and it slides in and out of high/low 2wd/4wd like a dream now.

Thanks for the reply. Tried reversing this evening, and jacked up the rear. The wheels did turn a little bit, unwinding? But still can't shift into 2wd. The hubs are free, so I'm hoping its okay to drive back like this? Hopefully when I'm home I can have a better look.
