    Faulty parking aid

Yep Thanks for that. It is really hard to see from Haynes or Rave the relative position of the level plug v the reverse switch. Maybe putting it up on ramps would also help as level plug I think is toward the back of the box whilst switch is at the front. Have never taken under tray off...

:D I know what you mean. Anyone know how much oil could be lost? Mark

    Faulty parking aid

I thought it was but not sure. Manuals talk of plugging the hole and topping up oil via level plug. Has anyone done this job? Thanks Mark

    Faulty parking aid

Did some testing today and it is the reverse switch as shorting out fixed it. Can anyone tell me how much gearbox oil I would loose when replacing switch? Mark

    Grinding noise from front brakes

May be wrong but there is an inner and outer pad. Have they been fitted the correct way round? I have never fitted any so sorry if this is silly but worth a comment. Mark

    Expansion tank filler cap

Strictly speaking pressure is not controlled but any over pressurisation is relieved via the cap. Very inexpensive part to change if you are in any doubt. I recently changed tank and cap in 20 mins as there were hairline cracks around neck of bottle. Mark

    Faulty parking aid

Well just a heads up for anyone else with similar symptoms. Fuse checked out ok but the inquisitive side of my looked for the reverse lights. Not on ! Tried hill decent switch in reverse to find flashing light. Mmmm me thinks. Now suspect reverse switch or cabling. I think there are two bullet...

    Faulty parking aid

Yep that is part of my plan but this type of switch is not mentioned in any of the literature so not sure if it pops out from the front or back or what. I will try and get it out and pop a test meter on it. Mark

    Faulty parking aid

Hi could anyone help with info on a 54 plate 1.8 Freelander parking aid. I could use the tow bar I know :D but get frustrated when things aren't just right. There does not appear to be any info in the Haynes or Rave other than Haynes says fuse 24 which checks out ok. Does anyone know where the...

    Leak found but frustrating.

Yep very relieved. Guys at the garage are ex MG rover techs so I trust their views on this engine. They vac fill as the set up on Freelander K series is equally as problematic as MGs. From looking at the work they used bottom hose to disconnect and drain then they must have vac filled back up...

    Leak found but frustrating.

Ok latest up date. Car back from garage. My wife picked it up so didn't get chance to quiz him on the finer details. Pressure tested and leak traced to inlet manifold. First big point here I looked in detail at this area and couldn't spot it. I thought it was the head joint so anyone having...

    Leak found but frustrating.

Oops forgot to answer the exhaust smell query. No there is no coolant smell to the exhaust. Also googling Payen has thrown up that it is an MLS design. I will try and get more details. At the risk of linking to something listed before I found this an interesting read from the MG side of things...

    Leak found but frustrating.

Update. Spoke with the guys at the garage (who I trust and have a track record of honesty with me anyway) and they have said they will sort it. They have said they would be surprised if it was the head gasket again if they have done the work. I described the symptoms of it sealing and...

    Leak found but frustrating.

Thanks guys. Gasket has been changed after water in oil. Has been fine for twelve months. Pretty sure it is not inlet gasket as nothing underneath inlet manifold and water appears at the joint of head gasket on back righthand side but it is on the side of the head/block above gearbox. As the...

    Leak found but frustrating.

After lots of searching and help from the forum I have located my leak on a 1.8 k series. 54 plate. It is from the top right hand corner of the head gasket when viewed from the front. Stood cold it was loosing 1/2 pint a day tracking down the joint and onto the bell housing at the front. The...

    Thermostat advice please

Thanks freelance. It was particularly the bleed from the back of the head and the one from the top of the radiator that concerned me as these go higher than the water level. Have searched the forum for k seal but cannot find any threads indicating positive or negative results. Anyone else used...

    Thermostat advice please

Yes a good point the gasket was replaced January this year so just coming up to the 12 months Mark but very little mileage. It's quite hard to see this corner of the head but all hoses look ok but the joint between the gearbox housing and the block has water tracking along it. This point also...

    Thermostat advice please

Thanks guys. Sorry I thought the thermostat issue was fairly well known for my year of car. It is a 54 1.8 k series 50k on the clock. It has a remote stat but it is cream in colour not grey as often stated to be the now preferred one. I guess I am asking if the grey is actually now preferred...

    Thermostat advice please

Hi still chasing down a steady water leak but difficult to spot with snow and slush around. I have a replacement head tank and cap on the way as there are some small hairline cracks near the tank neck. I don't think this is my problem but hey. I have a cream coloured prt stat in this 54 model...

Help please 1.8 coolant loss identification

Thanks guys. This is really frustrating, Have run the car today and been stationary on the motorway for ages. Got home, let it cool down and checked the level. It hasn,t really used any. And yet there was the loss of a full header tanks worth over a week stationary in the garage. I think I need...
