I think it needs to be done. :) Quite happy to be a git in this instance. :)

Economy and how it can be improved

Just bought a V8, so, speaking as a complete novice :) There are four efficiencies to consider - Volumetric (how much gas flow can you get efficiently), thermal (how much can you extract from the fuel), mechanical (how much do you lose driving all the bits, like pumping losses, large 4x4...

Why did you buy a disco!!

To be honest, the most reliable of the lot was the first Freelander, with the Rover diesel engine in it. Bought it second-hand, had it 3 years, never missed a beat, sold it to a mate who had it 4 years and it never missed a beat. Still chugging along, as far as I`m aware. :D :D Worst by quite...

Why did you buy a disco!!

Well, had a 2a, two 3s, a P38 DSE (which was DREADFUL!), two Freelanders, and on third Disco (two 300Tdi, one V8). Just about to buy another one . . . . I suppose that would tend to point towards some kind of awful addiction, really. :)

Enough is enough - its going.

I `ve just been reading this and sympathise enormously - I had a DHSE about 5 years ago and it remains the worst car I have ever had - and I include a Vauxhall Viva, Chrysler Alpine, Two Lancias, four Alfa Romeos and eight other land rovers in that statement! Had the RF problem (Radio ham...

MPG/ Full Tank? What you getting?

Managed about 45 miles with the red light on but bravery ran out before the diesel did .

Disco 1 - in two gears at once?

Hi, Paul Many thanks for that. Had the handbrake drum off about a month ago when I did the prop couplings just to have a look and all seemed fine then. Still, it`s a Landie so that`s not a lot to go on, I know! Cheers Steve

Disco 1 - in two gears at once?

Evening, all I have a 300tdi Disco which has been brilliant until a couple of weeks ago. Stuck it in reverse, backed up and felt like the handbrake had come on. Then wouldn`t go forwards either, then gearlevel went "floppy" as if it had jumped out of the gate. Then it all went back in and after...

    Heeeeellllllllppppp!!!!!!!!!!

If it`s pressurising the expansion tank the obvious fault would seem to be head gasket failure. Not sure why it would have popped the gasket while it was standing, though. Might be worth bleeding the cooling system to make sure you haven`t got any air in the system, as well. Do it with the...

    gearbox trouble

Well, if you`re still there when we all come over to Le Mans, Roy, we`ll sort you out then! Best of British. If you`re stuck, e-mail me and I`ll put you in touch with mail-order bods over here, who are excellent. Cheers, Steve.

Have you got a wiring diagram for it? If not, e-mail me and i`ll scan you one. Cheers, Steve.

    gearbox trouble

Check to make sure the clutch isn`t dragging first, mate. Sounds like synchro cones / hubs /sleeves. Bits aren`t terribly expensive but DIY gearbox repair is one for a specialist, really, or confirmed meccano addicts. Recon box is the best option. DIY £500-ish, garage £700 up...

    200tdi timing belt snapped

if you`re lucky, mate, it`ll have taken one or two tappet adjusters off! Don`t usually do a huge amount of damage on the 200. usually as well to whip the head off to check, though. Price-wise, there`s one or two suppliers on=line who can provide all the bits. Cheers, Steve.

    Heeeeellllllllppppp!!!!!!!!!!

yes, mate. Can`t remember off the top of my head what my V8 had, but I seem to think there`s an amplifier on the side of the distributor (I`m sure the guys will correct me if I`m wrong!) and if there`s corrosion anywhere on the earths / grounds it`ll affect the spark. Always worth checking...

    Heeeeellllllllppppp!!!!!!!!!!

Get a decent ballasted sports-coil, (one that has a 9 / 10 volt input) and try that but check the amplifier earths first, just in case.

    300tdi timing belt mod

Heard about it. THere`s an injection pump pulley / tensioner roller mod, I think. Something to do with the pump and crank pulleys not lining up properly.

    Tdi Engine

Had this on my 300tdi. Lift pump failed. Exactly the same symptoms - went like stink up to 3000rpm and then it was like someone had stuffed a sock in the inlet manifold. Try a new lift-pump first. There`s enough suction from the pump in the back of the injection pump to run it to 3k, but not...

    Heeeeellllllllppppp!!!!!!!!!!

Try the coil, mate. Have you tried disconnecting the king-lead at the distributor end, holding it near the block and checking for a spark when you crank it over? I asume you`ve checked electrical feeds to coil etc.
