Thanks for the help guys, after giving it a good run out the black smoke has pretty much gone now,look, must've been some crap left in the system. Got the egr bypass on order and will do the breather mod and intake clean while I'm at it. Will do a search for other preemptive mods too.

I'm picking up a EGR bypass kit today and while doing that I'll clean the inlet manifold. Hopefully that'll sort it. Odd that changing the pipes didn't help, it would be the ones connecting to the turbo would it? Wouldn't that cause different issues?

Well darn. I replaced both top hoses and it's still doing the same thing! Thought I'd sorted it when I found the hole, bugger! Any thoughts on what else it could be? Is there a way of checking the EGR valve? I did pull lots of black gunk out of it.. There is a hole in the left hand corrugated...

Not sure if I've got the wrong end of the stick, is it that your struggling to get the ball joint bolt to move out of the hole near the brake caliper? I had to get the lr jack between the wishbone and the bottom of the spring cup to move it enough to get it out when I had to remove the reluctor...

Just when I'm driving along straight, I don't think it changes appreciably when turning. It occurs at around 30mph upwards, although I think it tapers off around 50mph, but that could just be road noise drowning it out. Will go out into the cold and test with both sides up now! Edit - it's off...

I'll give that a go, I do have a slight whiring (is that a word?) noise from the rear when going along, could be that or a bearing perhaps? Or even the diff? Oh so many things to go wrong. :D
