Get a hobby kit spray gun just like back in the airfix days and spray it on a small hobby brush will also do. If you spray you have to mask it if you paint you Don't.....it's in the detail
You should be fine back in the day I did the sames with the decals on my airfix models as a kid. The decals won't be dripping wet when you lift them out the water with your tweezers

A known issue is the sender unit in the tank if the battery was disconnected while work was going on and the fuel was low it can cause the car to go into safe mode stopping it from starting if the fuel gauge reads empty.
Hopefully yours is still running if it goes into safe mode you need diag...

Continuing with the colour coding I got hold of a rear lower tailgate trim panel. It came in silver/grey I debadged it rubbed it down coat of primer,coat of base, couple of coats of clear bit of a hand sand with 2000 grit then a polish
You can just fill.up from an lpg tank I can still get it if I'm near a friends house it's not worth the round trip just for lpg.
By next year I think it's pretty much fazed out as road fuel so I mite remove my lpg tank as well shame as I only got it working properly last year
