Front passenger door on Disco 4 not unlocking with key fob

Hello. I am new here and therefore apologise in advance if I make any errors in posting this thread. I did try searching for this problem in relation to the Discovery 4 but could not find anything specific...although that may be because I did not look hard enough.

On my Discovery 4, the key fob unlocks all doors, except the front passenger door. It does however, lock all doors. After spending far too many hours researching this, watching videos on you tube and getting distracted with a bonnet repair on my Discovery 3, I came to the conclusion that I would require a new actuator...well, the vehicle...not me. I have ordered a part, which I hope is the 'right part' and will go ahead and do my best to make things better...and not worse, once it arrives. I am somewhat reluctant to remove the door card and start tinkering before the part has arrived...as I am not sure I'll be in a position to do very much without the aforementioned actuator thingymajig. I was hoping that it might be a relatively small issue of something just not moving as it should...please forgive my lack of technical jargon.

I would very much appreciate your thoughts and of course, time to respond. I thank you kindly in advance.

Plus 1 , in getting it replaced ASAP, particularly if the actuator fails altogether as its then a lot harder just getting the door panel off

Ur so very welcome , always a team effort

May I ask what year is ur D4 please as the keyless entry actuators are different than the earlier ones , here’s also a video for u, apologises if you’ve already seen this one

They also share what tools etc ur need , like many of us have also replaced them, personally done mine for my d3 , I got genuine ones if I remember rightly as quality on some can be questionable

hope that’s also useful to u

These show part numbers if it’s keyless or not plus are a decent supplier used by many of us

It is beyond useful, thank you. I am grateful for any and all responses and although I have seen the thumbnail for that video, I have not, as yet, watched...but will do so later today when I've finished working on the other things that demand my attention.

It is a 2011 model. I did check the key requirements but there's always a chance I didn't do it correctly and so will check again.

that's just brilliant, thank you. Now need to double check that the one I ordered, will fit. Would hate to remove everything, only to find that I have to put it all back together and repeat the process on another day

That’s great its useful to u, plus tools that u may not have I’ve found Halfords advanced very well priced and even better if u have a trade card

so very grateful that you've taken time out of your day to be so kind and helpful, thank you. I'm a woman who has a fair number of tools...not too many but usually, just the right ones, for either stripping down a bike, taking apart a vacuum or dishwasher and all the bits and bobs in-between. However, I'll be sure to look there if there are any others that I might require

I have only ordered an actuator...and not the cables. Now wondering if I should do that as well? What do you think? Thank you kindly in advance

Hi

Ur so very welcome, indeed ur find the forum full of very helpful members

The cable is attached to the door handle itself for when u exit the vehicle so if that’s ok it should be fine unless of course u wish to replace them at the same time , personally I just fitted new actuators and reused the cables

As a side note the actuator basically has 2 x motors inside one to unlock and one to lock the door

Indeed it’s just a fidly job , think it took me a few hours as I just took my time

Hope it all goes smoothly for u and always a pleasure being to help where possible

Gary is one of the most helpful people on the forum, he is probably the most, politest person on here too.
You sound like you know your stuff, so should get this done ok.
There are quite a few ladies on the forum, hopefully, you will stick around.
It's a very helpful forum, with tons of knowledge.

Good morning to you. It's wonderful to hear from you. Indeed, Gary has been wonderfully kind with his knowledge and time and it's so very much appreciated.

I'm a grafter and I'm not afraid to take things apart in order to figure out how they work. However, I did end up with a couple of spare screws after putting a vacuum back together...but it works and that's good enough for me. I'll try not to make the same mistake with this project.

Bless u and ur so welcome , always nice being able to help where possible

Don’t mind admitting I bought my D3 some 8 x years ago and knew nothing , it was all down to the wonderful people here who helped and taught me a lot

Also learnt a lot from fixing mine , from door actuators to virtually rebuilding the air suspension, really enjoy being able to pass things on

Couldn’t agree more that ur find this forum a wonderful place to be , full of such nice souls as a community , also hope that u stick around as it’s nice seeing more ladies joining

Plse let us know how u get on and don’t ever hesitate to shout if u get stuck on anything as plenty of us to help where we can
 
Also found this which hopefully helps along with the other one

Plus forgot to say if the door cable keeps coming out as u reassemble the door I used some small cable ties to hold it in place onto the actuator to prevent it from coming out as u put the door card back on

I did get some single window suckers, the double ones arnt much help due to the curvature of the glass, saves u having to mess around with gaffs tape , as I also done it by myself there very useful holding the glass up by placing the suckers as low as possible and therefore the glass is held up out the way

U just need enough gap on the window to be able to pull it up out of those white clips out of the window regulator

there are white clips that hold the glass onto the window motor mechanism , they can break , if they do or are already broken plse let me know and I’ll find the link as u can buy just them without having the expense of buying the door glass

Managed to find a picture , ur see as the cable slits into the actuator and the door handle in the bracket ur see very small slots , thats where u can put some cable ties to hold the cable in place , marked on the pic with an arrow

As a side note as ur going to have ur door open ur interior lights will be on, over a prolonged period of time it can drain ur battery

Plse press and hold the centre button of ur front overhead interior light , i think it’s the same in the D4 , after a few seconds ur see all the interior lights go off, then when finished press the centre button again and they will come back on again

Just thought it would then save u battery abit

Hope that’s also useful to u
