    Loud screeching sound..

The solenoid had been repaired. It seems that sometimes it didn't fully disengage from the engine and thus the loud, scary, expensive sounding screeching noise

    Loud screeching sound..

I had the same symptoms. It appears to be the starter motor. It's worth a check.

    Britpart VCU

Bom dia Nitrous :welcome2: As you have probably deduced by now, Britpart does not have much of a reputation around here. Here's the link for Bell Engineering Products - Bell Engineering A quick search on the forum might tell you more about reconditioned VCU's

Does anyone use '4' on the auto gearbox?

It can be useful on a mountain road so it doesn't shift into 5th and lose revs.

    MOT then develops leak…

Over here I had to insist that they do it like the video shows. The first guy said that often Freelander owners remove propshaft - to save fuel, he said - and there was no need to use the rollers on the rear axle. Never took it there again. I think most testers are just lazy to put the...

    BMW diesel engine

My TD4 was also from December 2000. I am not sure about this, but I read somewhere that the first TD4 were available since August 2000. The OP can also check other characteristics in this wonderful site: Freelander - Overview Menu - Land Rover

    FBH thermostat failed?

The part number seems to be JWL000020 http://lrcat.com/images/2225.gif There is also some more info here: Freelander - POOR HEATER PERFORMANCE FROM COLD ENGINE START UP - Land Rover and here: FBH external temperature sensor - The 75 and ZT Owners Club Forums

    FBH thermostat failed?

Yes, and then, when you turn the engine off, it blows lots of smoke and emits a rather scary sound:D From RAVE: The ambient air temperature sensor controls a power supply, from the alternator via the Engine Control Module (ECM) to the FBH unit. The sensor is installed on a bracket attached to...

    FBH thermostat failed?

Yes, there is a sensor behind the bumper iirc. It is supposed to activate the FBH when the exterior temp drops below 5Cº

What makes Freelanders betterer than other 4x4's?

The headgasket eventually failed, but not until I could bring it to the shop. It was on warranty:) A TD4 will happily cruise at 140 or 160 Kph (or 100mph), but I found myself enjoying driving at a steady 110 Kph:o

What makes Freelanders betterer than other 4x4's?

Mine pushed the limits of reliability! Never let me stranded, even though I drove more than 100Kms with no coolant:eek: and almost no fuel. It was a scary (but confident) trip. I had had it for two weeks and had no idea it was losing coolant (t'was a TD4, not the 1.8). The Freelander won't...

What makes Freelanders betterer than other 4x4's?

I've parted with my TD4 a month now - now driving a Saab 9-3 SW - and I still miss it. Can't really explain, but driving it was more fun than any other thing and I drove an M113 and derivatives! :mil80:

    What Freelander?

It is the other way around as the auto is a bit more thirsty than the manual. When I had my FL1 Auto (no remap) I was getting consistently an combined average of 35mpg (8 L/100Km). There is a lot of good advice here for buying a used FL. Good luck

    What Freelander?

I would go for the late FL1. Especially, if you have dogs :)
