I've had my '87 3.5efi auto for nearly 16 years.
A good 20w/50 mineral oil with high ZDDP content changed every year or 3k miles.
These engines, the design of which can be traced back to the 'sixties, were never designed for 'slippery' oil...
Well its been a busy time the range rovers been in full use as has the trailer,
As normal its started and worked everyday behaving itself as it always does,
Just clocked 153k today,
An impulse buy 5 days ago, a 2001 Mercedes S500L on 90k miles...
So, did two thing: temp auto joke (or wjatever those temp senstive thing on Zenith carbs are called) to see if I replaced bith or just one last year. I only did one, which could explain the ignition issues under load. Tried to start her, didn't...
Oh yes, I sprinkled some water on them, evaporated immediately. The engine was perfectly fine so. I think the carbs evaporated more fuel that day than the engine burned. Luckily, fuel was, for us not so much for the locals, dirt cheap. Only time...
If you worried about over-heating, I cannot recommend oil coolers enough. Worked great, even at 50° C, I kidd you not, ambient temp, engine never got even close to over-heating despite running very lean due to boiling carbs. Easy to install as well.
I see. I have an NOS spare one marked with the letter ''T'' and some other ones in my parts boxes in case you may need anything.
Well for me at least, the Workshop Manual is a huge help, especially with the electrics. Its got the whole wiring...
Oh the wiring... First, mine is a hack job from 80s and 90s (trailer, additional headlights, speedometer, ship horn that could be switched of for MOT, Jaguar XK transistor ignition...) and a horrible mess, one that miracuolusly works. Funny so...
I'll let you now! I did replace the left hand one, yesterday I found a new one when doing some other stuff in the car, so I am not sure I did the right one back the day (or the other way round, don't remember).
I am lucky, the car came with...
Timing is good (-ish). It was a longer story, started with the heat issue and loss of power under load and got worse after JLR installed the new camshaft. Took some tinckering, replacing all spark plugs, the ignition lines and adjusting timing...
Hey hey,
I was trying to figure why i had a somewhat rough idle after a freeway run (the temp dropped a bit due to airflow) on my 3.5 V8 with the twin CD175 Stromberg setup. I found my issue and it was the temp compensators. They were out of...
Very usefull bit of information, as I'm finally doing some work on mine something to check, sometimes she's sputtering a bit, and I just changed those which solved that particular issue most of the time.
So, for what its worth, I had the same probpem with my Stromberg carbs, extremely pronounced in the Tunesian desert (go figure). Was definietyl heat induced, as the carbs were basically boiling while you could touch the engine block without too...
I alternate between 20W50 and, I think, 10W40, depending whether I do the oil change or a JLR garage. The latter use 10W40, so far no noticable difference. Anyway, I change every 10k km or once per year, old engine designs and a 42 year old...
Here are some specs:

I reckon if you are worried about the mpg you probably shouldn't buy a 101. Mine still isn't on the road yet but when it is i'm going to be in total denial regarding the fuel economy...
Seriously though. You've a brick with huge tyres and very low gearing using an engine designed when petrol was cheaper than water.
It's not going to be competitive with anything, bar a petrol HGV.
When I bought mine a few years back, it came with an aftermarket cruise control unit (she was used as towing vehicle to tow boats around for a while). Never worked, so I tore it out. Never really figured out how it was supposed to begin with, but...
Long time no see, or post or read! Well, between work, bad weather, vacation and other commitments, I didn't have time to do anything with her since the failed MOT / TÜV last autumn.
But today, ladies and gentlemen, I finally did it! All...
