    Manifold

Diesel or petrol? I know I found it nearly impossible to get a new manifold for mine a few years back, so do your best not to damage it further when removing! (Mine was diesel) Getting it off is reasonably easy, take off the intake manifold then the exhaust, there are studs threaded into the...

    Checking battery voltages

Probably worth checking your belt tension while your looking at everything, though it doesn't seem too abnormal, I'd have expected slightly higher but doesn't seem any need to worry ! Just out of interest is it a alternator or Dynamo ?

Is this an original pick up??

To me it looks like a 110 (maybe 130) hi capacity pick up, these had different tubs on the back, but the pictures aren't quite clear enough to be sure

Engine cuts out when down shifting

Diesel? Or petrol? If diesel, my guess is the idle on the fuel pump is too low (had this problem after i passed my test, for 6months heel toe was the solution;)

Air getting into fuel when parked uphill

Well I guess the cheap way to find out is fill it up and see what happens!, I think the unions on the top of the tank are cast steel ( or similar) could have cracks ? Or even the pick up tube?

Air getting into fuel when parked uphill

How much fuel is in it? The pick up pipe is closer to the front, so if it's uphill facing, that might be it, also I'd make sure you really know what's in there, Landrover fuel gauges have a habit of telling us lies now and then !

    Fumes inside

Ah I may have lied about the manifold, I have a diesel, and when I needed a new one a few years ago, couldn't find a new one anywhere, but I've just read back its petrol, in which case I know nothing about those manifolds. (I blame the hangover) Thanks Ben waine

    Fumes inside

Where is it blowing? If it's the manifold to down pipe, be careful!!! The studs on the manifold will be near impossible to remove, and the thread and nut will be corroded badly so if you take it off, might be a pain to sort out, as you can't buy a new manifold (should be able to get second hand...

    What brake fluid for a '71 series 3 109?

The only difference (that you should car about) with dot 3/4 is boiling point ! For 4 has a higher boiling point! And I am pretty sure both are 'natural' where as 5 and 5.1 are synthetic, the synthetic stuff will rot all the rubber in your system, also 5 and 5.1 have a even higher boiling point...
