Servicing a disco question

In the service schedule for my discovery 300Tdi (1998)
it never mentions changing the power steering fluid.

Also it never suggests changing the glow plugs.

Are these best left alone? Or would it be beneficial to
periodically change them?

You should not need to change the glow plugs as they are very realey used,

Considering the 300TDI is a direct injection engine it dosnt need them to start it on a normal day to day basis.

From time to time i have herd roumers that the tips of the glow plugs have fell of and gone in to the engine BUT this is very rare and im not sure if it was becasue of over use of the glow plugs that did it .

When I bought my disco (300TDi ES Auto with Electronic Diesel Control) three
of the four plugs had gone, and it was a pig to start on a cold day. Now it
needs heat on a cold day but starts OK, I put this down to not being over
fuelled because of the EDC. You can check the plugs individually and they
are fairly easy to replace.

As to power steering fluid, change it if it looks dirty or thickened.

more or less what has already been said, glow plugs are a "change when
broken" item, not like spark plugs which are generally a "change after X
kms" item. the glow-plugs on my old landcruiser where probably 25 years old
and still kicking. you can check them by pulling it out and checking it's
resistance. should be of the order of a couple of ohms i believe.
power-steering fluid, probably a once every 20,00 ks or 2 years or
something.

Just because they're not open circuit doesn't mean they are working
properly so you should really test them. Any really good parts supplier
should have the "heat time" listed in their glow plug manual. When
you've removed the glow plugs fire them up on the appropriate voltage
and check that they start to glow red in the specified time. If they
don't, replace them.

Every 72,000 miles or 6 yrs under normal conditions
Every 36,000 miles or 3 yrs under adverse conditions

The previous service history must be taken into consideration
