Winter tyres...which ones do you have?

Will be more than fine Duncan.

I am an advocate for cold weather (or winter) tyres.

I like to be able to stop as well as go round corners as well as move off. I am personally not convinced that AT tyres work well on ice & snow and cold roads (sub 7C).

AT tyres don't have the same compound as cold weather tyres or the sipes, so I can't see how they can be anywhere near as good.

My AT tyres spin in the dry so I'm not convinced they will be any better in the cold & slush.

My AT's and the Wranglers have any amount of sipes as well as a snowflake symbol, the bog standard wrangler m&s are amazing in the snow

To be honest, my AT's don't have many more than the Grabber's on reflection, and my AT's are shocking in the wet! They were pretty pathetic on the very limited snow we had last winter too, although I did improve on my drifting skills in that time

The new ratings system helps , I've been looking at putting a set on my van because some of the places ive been going are a bit off the beaten track

Michelin alpines seem like they're pretty good, B rated for wet grip

The ratings are helpful, but as each manufacturer rates their own tyres, you really can't compare them :D

I wanted Michelin Alpin tyres, but they seem to be quite hard to get hold of, whereas the Wintrac 4 Xtreme turned up next day. The Continental WinterContact I had before were also hard to get hold of.

Was thinking the same myself, depends how hard wearing they'd be really! Having said that my aunt and uncle use wintracs year round on their jags, a set lasts a couple of years

Get a good write up!!
Your AT's are 225/65/17 aren't they?

They are. So my winter tyres are a little smaller, but larger than standard.

The above photo I posted was of a courtesy vehicle (Freelander 1) with standard 215/65 R16 Grabber AT tyres and wheels, running in mondo mode. No wonder if felt livelier.... (it has the same remap as mine).

Hi there

I know that this topic has been probably done to death but as another winter approaches I'm looking to run a set of winter tyres this time round.

I have got a spare set of 17" XS rims to match the ones on the car as standard but there are so many makes of tyres its difficult to know which to get.

I don't want to invalidate any warranty that the vehicle still has. My local dealer in Ashford who are probably the best main agent I have dealt with in 28 years of motoring have advised me to go for LR approved winter tyres, the Goodyear Ultra Grip SUV+ 235 65 17 108 rated tyre. They have also been advised of the Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow being acceptable to LR.

I tried to get an answer from LR Customer Service...apparently Technical are not customer friendly so will not talk to me. Still waiting for LR CS to ring me back!!

Which way do I go?

Sorry guys mine is a FL2 and not a FL1.

Paul
