Winter tyres...which ones do you have?

So do people not find good alpine marked AT tyres ok in the snow? I have never had an issue and frequently do crazy off road attempts in the snow. I like to try to cross a specific road in weardale at least a few times each winter and only normally get stopped by depth.

Maybe worth knowing which Brands people don't rate in the snow?

I'm not a tyre guru but I don't think there are too many Alpine marked All Terrain tyres about. I've just got some Cooper Discoverer M+S2 but I don't think the tread pattern is quite as "All Terrain" as a BFG AT etc.

Anyone know of any?

True I'm sure it depends largely on the tread pattern and compound. The hankooks I had on last year did a super job, not saying better than a true winter tyre but very good

on my old Freelander I never had a problem crossing over Buxton in the snow when only 4x4 s were allowed with Wranglers on but I do not go that way now and now in my newer Freelander I have Michelin Latitudes on all round , and after last years wet winter I do not think I am going to change them.

I just planted and seed and let it grow...

Traction in snow and ice is not the problem. Stopping, going down hills and round bends are.

Which particular road in Weardale? I have opnly recently bought the Freelander, but never got stopped on any of the roads in the Works Ford Ranger a coule of years ago when they were particularly bad and I was ferrying homecare staff about

You can't argue with that!!!!!! It's a dear do with 225/55/17 on though if your keeping a spare set. I run on Scorpion STR and they seem pretty good in winter but seeing true winter tyres I might look for a spare set of wheels.

For what the UK can throw at you, STR's are more than good enough

Think I would add that although I posted the videos of the winter tyre tests, they are comparing the two extremes (i.e. summer tyre with a high speed tread pattern to a full winter tyre).

What is not clear is just how much of the advantage in the snow the winter tyres have comes from the different tread pattern, the siping or the different compound. On my 300 Tdi Disco I have Cooper Discoverer A/T which have a winter-a-like tread pattern, some siping but not winter compound - in the snow they seemed as good as the Michelin XZL's I used to use.

It would be very interesting to see a test with all season tyres in it as well - tyres like the Discoverer A/T and Scorpion STR might be 80% as good as full winters - who knows?

They demonstrate it quite well. I also think that all season tyres are better in the ice and snow than all terrain tyres.

Great tyres. Not been made for a few years. I put some on my Yeti in 2010, had a puncture in Feb 2011 and could not get a replacement so had to get a pair of TS830. and put the tyres on my Fleelander last winter.

Here's a couple of questions for you all. When you change over a set of wheels/tyres for summer/winter how do you go about home storing your non fitted wheels and tyres. The question is a simple as are they ok stacked on their side ? are they in a rack?

I got a set of 15" alloys last year and put kingpin AT's on. A bit noisy but handled well. Going back on soon.

I use a cheap eBay tyre tree that fits the wheels. Make sure it is big enough, as mine is the right size for winters, but not for my AT tyres & rims. Bought for a previous vehicle.

I've just got a set of Goodyear Wranglers A/T fitted. Will they be ok for winter wet weather & snow or should I get a set of winter tyres fitted?
