What is an acceptable level of oil consumption?

Basically there are three main tests a garage can do to test the HG. All three ideally should be used together to give a full test of health.

"Sniffer" test - tests for combustion gasses in the coolant.
Compression test - tests the engines dynamic sealing properties
Leak down test - tests the engines static sealing properties,

Also a good test will be to pressure test the coolant system.

The garage may or may not do all of these but they can all be used to identify where the problem is.

Leak down test, can't say I've ever heard of that. What does that entail?

Basicly engine turned to tdc on the cylinder to be tested. Combustion chamber filled with compressed air, and the pressure is monitored to see if there is any leak.this is better than a compression test although is quite similar.

Ok I get where your going. Hopefully garage can give me assurances I'm not going to blow my engine up.

Oh there is a small leak by the head gasket/block. Not leaking to much down the block though.

Where abouts on the head? Front, back, timing end, flywheel end?

A small leak is a good sign when you are losing oil!
Def at the back near timing belt side, I think also front gearbox sign. It's only on the block though not made sump guard.

I've been reading the haynes manual again back of the book page ref.11 mot test checks under HC emissions, says excessive oil been burnt (worn engine), or by a blocked crankcase ventilation system ('breather')

If you asked a garage to do an emissions test and the HC level is too high it may point you towards the problem.

What is a blocked crankcase ventilation system, is this the purge valve as decribed on pages 4c.2 and 4c.3

In the book it says disconnect the hoses from the charcoal canister and purge control valve and check that they are clear by blowing through them. full testing of the system can only be carried out using specialist electronic equipment which is connected to the engine management sytem diagnostic wiring connector. If the purge control valve or charcoal canister are thought to be faulty, they must be renewed.

I'm burning a litre of oil a month and have done the test you've decribed, sniff test, compression test all ok and the car is running and pulling fine not overheating no loss of water or mayo, the leakdown test was next on my list as i've ordered an otc cylinder leakage tester.

If the purge valve and charcoal canister are the crankcase ventilation system (i don't know for sure if they are) and are faulty or blocked this maybe causing the problem, i may change these and see if my oil consumption goes down.

Keep me posted.

Well found a damp patch on front of rad. So that's now been replaced. Hopefully that's the end of it.

hi a blocked crankcase filter well that's can be a problem on the td4 not the 1800 or v6
