Default vcu problem

when i bought the freelander 1 it was set up as 2wd with a recon with paperwork vcu so thinking it was time i fitted it i took it round the block and it has the symptoms that it is not working correct tight turn feels like the brakes are on as i turned into my road it did this again not jacked up the wheel yet to do the basic check/test been working away but have a feeling its naff so for the moment i will not drive it
as its been sitting around for nearly a year can this affect the vcu

Don't think so. It's using it that tightens it up.

no idea
it would be interesting to know if they have there own label or stamp on there vcu
as it is possible that the seller gave me a dud one with the paper work and kept the new vcu to sell on

just did the one wheel up test it took my weight to get the wheel moving once moving it took less weight to keep it going
this was done while cold so i take it if i took it for a run to warm up the vcu and did the wheel up test it would be stiffer /harder to move the wheel

If it takes all your weight to move the wheel then either you are a toddler or the VCU is too stiff and needs removing before it causes damage to the IRD or rear diff!!

I put the wheel brace onto a wheel nut to turn /check mine once a month...wheel turns with a steady constant pressure.

i used a torque wrench and am 10 stone once it started to move it took alot less pressure but i will remove it and fit another not worth the risk thank god i never paid out 300 for it it came with the car

You should be able to turn the wheel with a torque wrench easy enough. I think my VCU turns with something like 40ftlb of torque if the pressure is applied steadily.

not having done the test on a good vcu its hard to judge if it is working as it should one of the first things i did when i joined was read the sticky's and thought thats a simple test but still not sure will do the test again today but am sure it will get removed

FWIW Ron from my post on the VCU sticky
"Tested mine today and 4l of Castrols GTX at 1400mm took 55 seconds to horizontal . Not too bad ? Using my "bendy wand" torque wrench 100nm turned the hub through 45 degrees in about 20 seconds "

Mine is at 120k - shows some stiffness on full lock but no skipping/skidding or odd tyre wear - should be good in the snow !

i did the test like yours at 100nm it took more than that to get it to move and once it did took a min of 35 seconds so just in the process of taking it off

took it off did not notice it before a big sticker with you guessed it freelanderspares.co.uk and phone number
about the only thing its good for are bearings and a grinder to see if they have done anything inside the unit
