Hi guys, I'm sure this has been covered over & over, but I am running against the clock and need some help.

My wee brother died suddenly on Tuesday and is currently in the care of the coroner in Aberdeen. We await his body being returned and are in a kind of limbo.

My wife and I live in Inverness, my family in Banff, 71 miles from Inverness.

The problem is my brother in law's Freelander clutch went on Wednesday and they need a car for obvious reasons.

So, being the fab mechanic that I am, I said I'll change the clutch and save a fortune (he paid £1600 7 months ago to renew the clutch & DMF......but silly boy rides the clutch pedal!).

I have taken all the bolts out, yet the box wont budge and thats my problem

My wife is working tomorrow am and I have to go home and look after my darling baby son (not too much of an issue to take him with me to my family to do the Freelander, but all the extra miles is costing me petrol money ).

I have all the tools you can think of and then some, but I didn't take my engine crane which I wish now that I had as it seems to be the easier option. So if I do have to go home & back I'll be doing just that.

But I don't want it to come to that.

Have I missed something? I am a bit upset, but I have donned my work hat and refuse to let it get to me just yet. Besides, my wee bro would have said get on with it and made me food & tea :)

From below I can see a bolt that looks as if it goes into the box (bell housing), but it is near the sump and inacessable due to the transfer box.

Do I need to remove the transfer box just to get this bolt or is the gearbox just really tight against the engine?

It's 2003 2.0 turbo diesel.

Finaly, whats the best way to disconnect the gear linkage on this model?

(give me a Renault Espace every time....I did my own box last week, in the garage at 4:30pm and out again all finished by 9:30pm including filling with oil :blabla:)

Thanks guys.

Andi

I dont think nows the time to be fugking around with a freelander.
This might help http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/gearbox-removal-96318.html If jimjp is right yes you have to remove the transfer box (IRD-Intermediate Reduction Drive)as I'm sure I'd have to do on my '98 2ldi.Better get a new Oring, sorry I dont know the size.

Sorry I dont have my haynes manual with me right now.

edit:the gear linkage on mine is a split pin that you can knock out with a punch.

You are right, now is NOT the time to be farging about with this shed of a car, but now I am so far on with it I have no choice :ballchain:

Besides, we wont be getting my brother back for a while yet (he was fond of drink, had epilepsy and all the pills involved in that as well as an unending desire to hurt himself. we think he took some illegal drugs the night he died) so we need a distraction I guess.

The Freelander is helping because I am mad as hell at my brother for wasting his life and swearing at a lump of metal is fairly theraputic.

However, having read the link (thank you for that) I see I need bigger swear words and more tea & biscuits as well as go home and fetch my engine crane

By the way, great forum :high5:

Hi guys, thanks again for the link.

Soon as I'd read it, I went and removed the sub frame, got the IRD off and the box almost fell off.....once I removed the final 15mm bolt and tiny 10mm bolt.

I discovered the cause of the slippy clutch (and the black mess on the sump that I originally thought was an oil leak).

The garage who replaced the clutch last time, only did the DMF and the clutch plate & cover.

They didn't do the combo bearing & slave cylinder.

It leaked & destroyed the clutch.

I bought the clutch kit for £215, so I cant understand why the garage didn't just do the whole lot the 1st time

I plan to finish the job tomorrow, but need to ask a silly question.....again

How does the gear linkage come apart?

I had to go home (73 miles) as my baby son was very ill. Turns out he has an ear infection so we got medicine & he's getting better.

Anyway, I loaded up my engine crane & extra jack so hope it goes back together easier than it came apart.

Once again, thanks for the help. I'll try to take pics of the job as I re-build.

As for my brother, they still doing tests on his body.

Some may wonder why I am able to deal with it so blase!

If I'm honest, I lost my brother a long time ago when he fell into the bottle.

My advice?

If, when drinking, you can't stand up, you've gone too far. Look at what is so crap about your life that you need to get falling down drunk and deal with it.

On my "98 fl I think my gearbox is the pg1,so yours being newer I'll type out what Haynes says for the Getrag 282.Please someone correct me if I'm giving advice for the wrong gearbox.
1.using a suitable flat bladed screwdriver., carefully lever the link rod balljoints off the gear box levers. Make a note of each link rods correct fitted location and which way around they are fitted, then detach them from the bellcrank assembly and remove them from the vehicle. (see illustration)
2.Prise the selector rod from its ball joints on the gear change lever and bell crank assembly and manoeuver it out from underneath the vehicle.
3.thouroughly clean all components and check them for wear or damage, rewiring all worn or faulty items.

Sorry I have no illustration.Hope this helps. You might want to post a thread or use search forum option top right of main freelander page.

Good luck.

Damn! I looked at the ball joints and thought "Nah, surely not!"

So it's simple as that, pop the joints. I guess lots of spray on 3 in 1 oil and a lever then.

I guess a spray of the same and a Vise Grip pliers to re-connect is the orderof the day.

And yes, it's a Gertrag box.

Normally I can figure such stuff out myself having been dealing with mechanicals for the past 20 odd years, but I think I may have been "somewhere else" the past few days.

Thanks again. :crutch:
