Hello folks,

Just bought a 2004 FL1 td4 2.0 and noticed that it has one odd tyre! 3 tyres the same and one different.

Nosing around on the forum I see that VCU/IRD/rear dif issues can be caused by mismatched tyres so my question is this....

how urgent is it that I get 4 new MATCHING tyres put on?

Can the spare be left alone as, in theory, it would only be used to get to a garage etc...?

Any recommendations on tyre choice, virtually all on road use?

cheers

When I got mine it had off road tyres on the back and road tyres on the front. It soon made a horrific noise like gearbox whine. Changed them to a full matched set and all is well.

So yeah, I'd change them sharpish, at least a good pair on the rear axle (that still match the fronts).

Spare wheel a bit of a conundrum, I got a set of four Maxxis last year but left the spare alone, it was a near new Pirelli, my thinking was that given my low mileage per year I may never get a flat and even if I did it may be so far ahead that I may be introducing a tyre with much less wear that the four road wheels so even if it was the same make it could therefore have a different overall diameter and be a risk of transmission damage so tyre make of spare not as important as the main road wheels, obviously if I had a puncture I'd be looking at changing a pair of tyres with new ones going on the rear.

cheers folks, just had 4 new Michelin latitude cross tyres fitted, not cheap but sound good by the reviews i've read. Will let you know how they go.
