Thinking about a Freelancer?

Hi all, after owning a P38 about 10 year ago thinking about going "Landy" again. Looking to go Freelander diesel! So! Opinions and experiences sought please, ie, L series or TD4, manual or auto, how tuneable/reliable are each, mpg differences etc. Will be my daily driver and it would be rude not to have a little off road play.
