Here's the history. Engine management light (EML)coming on when going up hill mostly or accelerating on motorway (flies down back roads by the way). Put common rail diesel cleaner into diesel. EML doesn't come on again. Driving really well with good power. Starts fine each cold morning, trouble starting at lunch time and when leaving work (engine cold), each time black smoke cloud when starts, I'm thinking the cleaner has damaged the heat/glow plugs but can't figure out why it start fine from stone cold. Today after 4 days of no EML, taking longer to start after 3 hours cool down. Car won't start at lunch time after filling with Diesel. Tried easy start and she ran on that until it cleared then stopped. EML and battery light on when turning over. Went back to car 3 hours later and she started. Drove home about 10 miles this time blue smoke coming out at gear changes. Then up hill at last mile EML back on and into limp mode, clears down hill. Anyone any ideas.

2004 Freelander 1 TD4 Auto 85k miles.
Switched on ignition last night fuel pump by tank rattling and fuel gurgling for a good 15 seconds, wouln't start

it could be fuel filter, or even pump, never hear fuel gurgling just the pump going sounds as though some how you have air in the system.

fUEL FILTER WAS CHANGED at last service Dec 2012. Have ordered a new fuel pump, good quality as i hear this is a common fault and some after market pumps fail within the year.

After the service have you double checked the oil level, it won't like being over filled at all, might account for the blue smoke.....

Have to agree with john t, I had a similar problem with our TD4 in that if left for about an hour then going back to it wouldnt start, but leave it for about another hour to cool down and would start and run ok. It was found that the cam sensor was cracked, replaced this and touch wood its been ok since.

Well whaT is pointing me to the fuel pump, is when it wouldn't start the other day, it started on easy start but wouldn't run on its own steam. No smoke coming out like there was no fuel going in!. I've been told that's the way a fuel pump acts up before failure.

yes agreed if its starting on easy start, could be fuel pump related, also chaeck fuel rail connections first, another known source of trouble,

Fuel pump changed, started and took for a drive, driving like a dream. I changed pump myself and it wasn't too difficult to change about 2.5 hours to change.
