Currently driving a Td4 auto, but am getting to the stage where more and more things need doing to it, so it's time for a new one.

Found a sweet Sport Premium, but it's a 2.5 V6. Insurance costs aside, how do people think the petrol unit compares to its rugged, take-any-crap diesel cousin?

Ta in advance

Peeps on ere will tell you the gaskets fail regular. They don’t. Some do, like all motors. Most causes of overheating or coolant leaks are: cracked thermostat plastic pipe, failed water pump (sod to get to) and slipped liners in the engine (usually wrecks the engine). The v6 wasn’t popular so there’s not that many about. When comparing against the Td4’s economy, which also came on sale at the same time, the Td4 was the obvious choice.

Putting that aside, the v6 is smooth and delivers power when you need it. Kick down is responsive to say the least. Certainly quieter than the diesels. Parts are a bit more expensive.

V6 is thirsty. My local mileage is mixed residential and A roads. I get 16.5mpg. Can get 28.5mpg by feathering it on the motorway at 60mph. So that’s not good, but as I do a low mileage it’s ok at the moment. Most spot v6’s as they’re cheap. This is true and it’s due to them being thirsty. Same v6 as per the rovers – it’s a rover kv6. Usually peeps sell them after the cam belt has been done. They can suffer from VIS value motors failing and manifolds can crack.

In general, bearing in mind I have a v6, stick with the Td4. Yes the v6 has more power for acceleration and I’m sure the Td4 synergy peeps will be along soon to discuss this, but the v6 will still beat a synergy modded Freelander from 0 to 60mph. Overall the economy and betterer reliability of the diesels is why peeps buy them. If your handy with spanners and don’t mind fixing it yourself then like some the v6 won’t put you off. I inherited mine so I didn’t pick it. If I had, it would have been the diesel. Next one (if I have another Freelander) will be a diesel. More likely a Freelander 2, as there’s only so many times you can tell someone: tyres… vcu… test it…

Tis just my opinion.

There should be loads of stuff on here if you do a search. My take on it is that the the 2.5 v6 has all the inherent problems of the 1.8 k series but with higher parts prices and worse fuel consumption. There is a reason they are so cheap, but if you buy with your eyes open at the right price (i.e. very cheap) and have enough spare time and cash to fix disasters (and buy lots of petrol), they can be a fair amount of car for the money. Having said that if I had a TD4 Freelander that couldn`t be fixed, and wanted a reliable reasonably economical engine in a replacement 4x4, I`d probably go non Landrover (I`m off to wash out my mouth with soap......................)

Td4 everytime - from one that had a KV6 :(.

If yu want a petrol (why) go X-Trail. Lower running costs and bigger boot. Does look plasticky tho.

All kinda chimes with what I've been hearing elsewhere.
Think I'm gonna have to just sit tight and wait for a decent-kit td4 arrives from the Landy Fairy
