Hi to all!

Im trying to figure out what the route of each vacuum pipe go to and from. I took off the acoustic cover of the engine and found that there is a loose vacuum pipe with filter from the turbo side and the T-joint along the vacuum line from the reservoir has been blanked off by a screw. Also, are there vent pipes located behind the air cleaner assy just behind the mafam? I dont know if the two should be joined together but I just want to make sure I install everything right before costing me something big.


Here are the pix of the existing vacuum line:

1. I intentionally removed the vacuum hose to the EGR and blanked it off and cleaned the whole intake system w/c was full of gu, got the idea from the forum and the effect was pretty good.

2. When I opened the acoustic cover, I saw this filter attached to one of the vacuum hose from the turbo, there was no hose attached to the other end of the filter. I only attached a hose on the other end just recently.

....and from the other side on the vacuum line, the T-Joint was blanked off. I only attached a hose just recently. (pic 2)

....what I did was to connect the hose from Pic 1 (filter end) to pic 2 (t-joint). Is this right? I noticed when I attached the two, I could hear the turbo spool better, the revs go up faster, 0-120km/h was faster but I couldn't pass the 120km/h mark, is there a speed limiter? Am I missing a vacuum line? Is this related to the valve depression limiter filter problem?

3. Lastly, I want to ask if these are breather pipes or vacuum lines?

The pipe with the filter on is an atmospheric vent for the solenoid that operates the VVT. It is intentionally open at one end so you need to remove the hose you have fitted.

The tee connection on the main vacuum pipe on the right hand side of the engine bay is the vacuum supply pipe for the EGR solenoid. It will have been disconnected and blanked to disable EGR operation. The fact that you have joined this to the vent filter will be stopping the turbo vanes from operating properly and so could be causing the speed limitation.

If the turbo is not spooling up its solenoid may not be operating correctly.
 
Yes block the branch of the tee as it was before. It will have been like that to prevent EGR operation so removing the hose from the EGR actuator on the valve was unnecessary in your case. You should still have benefited from cleaning it though.

Also the vent filter in your pic looks rather old so it should be renewed. ;)

When standing in front of the engine, if the left hand rubber pipe leaving the T-connection (pic. 3 in opening post) is the vacuum supply for the EGR solenoid it should be enough, in order to avoid the spindown noise with a blocked EGR-pipe, to block that pipe on top of the engine off rather than go look underneath the inputmanifold to find the arrival on the egr-solenoïd en block it off down there ??

Yes that's right willo, it's just so that people have the option to disable EGR in a discreet way and have everything look as it should when the vac pipe is disconnected out of site. ;)

Thanks and interesting. As I had this spindown noise once again last week I was thinking of taking off the undercarriage of the engine (which is a pig to do I understand), so if I now can follow that one pipe, until it's out of sight, and do something with/on it (maybe try to put a 'cap' on the T and push the leaving towards the solenoid pipe back over it?) things might be ok for me.

The small red circle in Pic.3 (the rigid pipe) is as far as I know a fuel tank vent. This is what i was lead to believe as I was wondering about the same stuff too.

However, I have another question about the vent hoses. Why is there a hose running along the injector harness as obviously this is not the place for such item there. I base my thoughts on the fact I see the same hose on my engine is being chafed in many places , looks like as being just dropped there and not routed well and ,also, a thread (http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/noticed-blanked-off-tee-207987.html) which could n`t give an indisputable answer as one guy says it should be like that and other members argue on the matter. I see on the LH side of the engine when facing it without the engine cover, an empty hose clip slot (this is probably not a tech term but I believe you know what I mean). Maybe this is one spot where the vacuum hose should pass through. Any thoughts on the issue ...????

IRD breather a.f.a.i.k. ..
fuel tank vent be at rear of vehicle methinks

those hose clips ( one piece plastic thing ) in the larger red circle
one clips on to that vent pipe .. the other to the stub of the turbo vent filter ..

The rigid pipe thingy is probably what you say hd3. But you see , I got confused when I was looking at the Td4 fuel tank lay out / diagram. There was a piece which looks very much like that IRD breather.

As of the clips, I was not talking about those securing the turbo vent to the rigid IRD breather but those located underneath the acoustic engine cover , again in left-hand side area. If you think that the vacuum hose which passes along the wiring harness of the injectors, should go through the clips please dont be shy to give a word of wisdom. But then again they are occupied by those you already mentioned that were routed originally through them. If you don`t have a clue what am I talking about(perhaps I have to brush up on my english skills :) ) I will take some pics and post them here for the sake of clarifying the issue. But this cannot happen in the next 2-3 days cause I am away and traveling now. Anyway, any thoughts on the subject matter would be nice to be shared.

hard to see IF that hose is coming from the back of the tank as it should ..
or .. whether the bit of hose circled in yellow has been cut and blocked ..
or if the vacuum-tank has been bypassed .. not a good idea imho ..

this one appears to show a vacuum hose routed along the bulkhead
it looks to be the one from the back of the vacuum-tank for the turbo solenoid

am fairly sure the hose just above the word "egr" ..
( as in "egr hose blocked" in green text )
is the hose exiting from the back of the vacuum tank ..
and runs over the engine .. by the injectors ..
then down to the turbo vacuum solenoid ..

can't be 100% sure on that as it's been a while since i had that injector cover off
( just going by memory .. cover was off 2 years ago ..
( but i wasn't searcing for vacuum hose routing at the time :)
the haynes manual shows what Maybe a vacuum hose running by the injectors

anyhow .. what frays will be the cloth covering over the rubber tubing of the vacuum hose ( i think ) .. and i've no idea about what hose clips may .. or may not .. be under my injector cover ..
you could always do your own vacuum hose routing .. use cable-ties to secure it ..
and buffer the bits that rub against something .. with a bit of rubber or similar ..
( obviously avoiding engine bits that get very hot .. as opposed to just hot/warm :)

as the engine vibrates .. especially at idle .. any hose or wiring ..
if not secured properly .. and protected against rubbing ..
will eventually wear thru ..
( for example .. the top left intercooler hose that is near one of the intake assembly securing screws )

btw: the haynes manual does show a set of clips that secure the turbo vacuum hose .. and some wiring
on the large pipe that goes from the maf housing down to the turbo air intake ..
i.e. the upper bit of that pipe that look to be plastic ...
( just going by the haynes photo .. not looked at it on my vehicle yet )

Very extensive post. Well done . I may reroute the hose (when I have a time to spare) despite the fact I start to think that it was originally left there laying like this (looking very sloppy) but in my opinion it should not be like that (my inner conviction). I will follow your advice and buffer all the points where rubbing may be present.
