Satan ****es in my face once again...

Its the other half's car, yesterday on the way to work it apparently sounded rough, then conked out, no smoke or anything, and then the hazards wouldn't work either.
Got it recovered to the local garage, their diagnosis is it needs a new engine, about £4000 worth.
Just checked the oil the day before, all fine with it.

The only thing I can think of is a blocked oilway??
A couple days before this, she ran it out of diesel, didn't try restarting as I told her, got the can out and filled up, all fine again.. would this have anything to do with it?

Haven't spoken to the garage yet mind.

hi

sorry to hear this mate, running out of diesel wouldn't have any bearing on it

what year and mileage did it have

are u mechanically minded yourself as i would have thought u could do a rebuild for around a grand maybe less, but depends whats wrong with yours and if it can be rebuilt

i think a few on here have rebuilt an engine so would be more accurate at the cost etc

have u used this garage before and there not trying to rip u off are they in just saying its seized, could be something silly

best to at least see what they say first and dont let them start to take the engine apart, if ur not mechanically minded get someone who is or get an AA inspection

plenty of people here to guide u on here, where abouts in the uk are u

The TD4 has been known to throw a crank
You can pick up a good replacement engine from a Rover 75 for a few hundred quid. ;)

may i ask a daft question please , how do the lumps compare, ie power etc,

is it just a question that the injectors and electronics are different between the rover and hippos, didn't realise they were interchangeable

seen plenty of rover 75 lumps on ebay for around a few hundred quid as u say but then a hippo lump are around 600

hope u didnt mind me asking and sorry in pinching the post a bit

thks

Yep I've done engines before, but old-skool classic Volvos and lotuses, never done a modern-ish diesel, also don't have time unfortunately.
I'm based near Hitchin, Herts so was thinking get my local independant Landy place to do the work who also can get a used engine apparently.. will speak to them later, had work done by them before, seemed ok.
TD4 known to throw a crank eh? woah (the missus does drive it like a sportscar)

The basic engine is the same between the Rover 75 and TD4. Mapping and turbo's are different giving the 75 unit more power. If you are fitting just the engine, it's an easy swap.

Thrown cranks are more likely to be from bad manufacture than driving style ;)
Sadly the TD4 engine has seen a few crank failures over the years.

blimey, my daughter lives up that way,

i used a garage called

rovers of Bedford
tel 01234 348469

they really know what there doing , see what they think if its any good to u

plus theres no way it should be 4 grand

even if u get it home and try to turn it over on the flywheel so at least u would know if its seized or not

hope it didnt come across as rude mate and that u get on ok

cheers mate

the reason i asked is my td4 is on 185,000 ,

so would u then buy a rover 75 lump and then bolt all the hippo electronics etc back onto the rover lump then

always wondered why the land rover lump always seemed more expensive or are u just paying for the land rover name then

sorry keep asking daft questions, :):):)

Cheers, I'll look them up. The place I've used before is Woodside Garage in Maulden.

BTW this engine had only done about 80k miles

Just spoke to the garage, apparently it still runs.. but very clanky.. death rattle etc..
So hopefully turbo still ok, used engine from the local landy specialist £500, fitting at the local village garage probable (they both know each other so should be fine) maybe £700 fitting.. not as bad as thought, but still not cheap!

give this guy a call (07853 402532 )he specializes in supplying freelander td4 engines, when my crank snaped he delivered one to me for about £550, that was delivered including injectors and hp fuel pump, was just a case of swapping the gearbox and a few other bits, been running fine for the last two years

Sounds like the donor vehicle was last seen on Landy Watch !

got the impression, they were insurance write offs, the body gets cut piece cut out of middle so it cant be used, but certainly the engine i got is sweet, the guy even offered to buy my old injectors, but i kept them just in case, i work it out if i sold a few of the auxiliaries such as hp pump and injectors the actual engine would have cost around £200 seemed a genuine dealer
