Td4 engine oil?!

I run my TD4 on 5W-30 fully synthetic oil that meets the LL01 BMW spec for that engine.

I would have have no hesitation in using almost any brand that had the LL01 spec printed on the container.

The oil you show on eBay is a 40 grade which is no extra benefit unless your engine burns oil in which case a grade thicker might help.

On close inspection of the label it does say LL01 - so it should be OK

A semi-synth 5W-30 would also be OK if LL01.

No need for LL04 Castrol edge type stuff - it's very expensive - and is the spec for the latest BMW engines. Our engines date back to a 1998 design.

I was going to ring BMW and ask them what oil they'd suggest seeing ass they designed the engine. Ok so LL01 then? Yes I could use the stuff lr suggest but my mate says u can't go wrong with fully synthetic. He's a mechanic and rebuilds audi/vw high milers. He said there as clean as a whistle because of the fully synthetic oil that's used and the detergents in the oil so always use quality fully synthetic oil. Semi I was told is ok but usually used in smaller and simpler engines like my mums 1.4 corsa.
Why does it need so much oil?

At my last oil change I used the latest spec ll04 Stuff

It's way to thin for me .... My engine seems a lot noisier than it was before

As said above this is probably great in a brand new engine but not right in an older engine with over 100k on the clock

Will be going for a cheaper semi synthetic next time

Chris
