Td4 another loss of power/MIL Q!

Right, So the car smoked like a trooper when been laboured up a hill and the MIL would come on briefly then go out.

I gave it a FULL engine service inc all of the filters.

I have repaired the inlet manifold as it was split (tempory measure) and removed, checked and cleaned the top two intercooler hoses, also checked the long plastic air intake thing for leaks/splits.

All vacuum lines checked and I cut out a small worn section.

EGR bypass fitted.

VNT actuator moves by hand, about an inch in travel. Tried running with it disconnected to test Boost valve/solenoid.

I've replaced the MAF as that was shot. But it was with a cheapy of eBay and made a big difference to low power/torque.

The FL now has much much less black smoke but the MIL still comeson briefly. It struggles to get past 65mph inclines.

I don't have any LR diagnostic equipment. VCU is ok. Although I do have a very rumbly prop bearing, the rear most bearing.

What else should I be looking at to see why lack of power on incline with MIL coming on?

THERE IS STILL A SLIGHT WEEP FROM ANOTHER SPLIT IN INLET MANIFOLD. Is this my problem? I will order a replacement one when funds permit as I spent more than I ideally wanted to on purchasing the FL for the wife and all of the serviceable items already replaced.

Sounds like another low pressure fuel pump on its way out.

If you back off does the EM light go out?

If it is the low pressure fuel pump, it will get worse (happen at lower & lower engine speeds) until it gives up altogether. It is a very common problem on our ageing motors. Mine went at around 120,000 miles, but had been on the blink for a few thousand miles. Then it went downhill very fast.

Slowly gets worse as the pump gives up. Ours eventually wouldn't get above 30mph up hill.

Right, due to the above comments (many thanks) I went for another drive to monitor the MIL.

In 4th Gear on a long incline the light came on around 50mph. I lifted my foot off the throttle for 2 seconds and light still on, put my foot back on the throttle to accelerate up the incline and after about a second, the light goes out. It did this three times up the incline.

I am in the process of uploading the video clip I took to Youtube as I type and will post a link once ready.

So, do people still think it's the fuel pump? I hope so as my wife wants to sell the dinky toy but I'm starting to like it (bar the faults) the more I drive it. :)

Is this fault fuel pump? Don't have the funds to just buy an item until I find the correct one. It will be going onto some diagnostics at a garage tomorrow but they're unsure if it will.work on a freelander.
 
fuel pump issue is the most likely culprit, if yours has done anywhere near 100 k miles then just replace it, as its only a matter of time befor it fails completly, cost about £120 for oem of ebay and quite easy to replace , i think your wasting your money having it diagnosed at a garage

also make sure all your hoses are in good order, any splits are likely to cause smoke

Well I got a Bosch fuel pump (Ti Automotive) same branding as the genuine old LR pump that I removed. Truck has covered 117k.

Truck is more responsive now but still has the same fault. was £85 + VAT for the pump from Andrew Page motor factor.

Had the codes read, FOC, and there are 3 codes listed. I'll post them in a thread though.

While you have a split manifold you might as well throw money away.

Any air leak on the inlet after the air flow is metered will cause you problems due to the incorrect fuel air mixture. Fix your manifold first........
 
I have a manifold ordered. Awaiting delivery. The fuel pump has improved the performance so the old pump was on its way anyway.

After doing some more searching I'm leaning towards the vacuum side/boost solenoid of the turbo that is the issue..maybe electrical, wiring to the solenoid . Will have a tinker tomorrow.

as above relating to the manifold

sorry asking a daft question when u replaced the fuel pump did u do the fuel filter at the same time and cleaned out the sedimeter

did u do the crankcase filter as well

regarding the maf which one did u get as if u got the pierburgh one its supposed to be fitted with a synergy box , as i read somewhere the cheap pierburgh mags dont have the built in compensators and thats what the synergy boxes do

but as the other guys have said need to do the inlet manifold first, then if u havent got round to it would do the fuel filter, sedimeter and also the crankcase filter

have u ran any millers fuel injector cleaner through the tank

the other guys are more experianced than me so will tell u more accurately if ive said something wrong

I did ALL of the filters two weeks are I bought it. No, I haven't ran any injector cleaner through it as yet. The MAF is just a cheap ebay at the moment.
I'm waiting for the manifold to be delivered so I can get it fitted on.
 
UPDATE.....replacement manifold fitted today and it has cured all running problems. Now drives like it should. Thanks to everyone who gave their input.

Now I have an annoying brake squeal!!! Grrrrr.

glad u got it sorted, always the huge sigh of relief comes to mind, lol

i think it must be catching with regards to the brakes, got my son to strip my brakes down and put some coppaslip on, sound now gone thk christ

drove me nuts, especially in traffic
 
When I get time I'll strip mine down (again) but clean then thoroughly the put back with copaslip. Might even replace the guide pins as I have a spare set.
 
Nope, was only 23 'up north' yesterday. Brakes didn't squeal yesterday at all.

Going out later this afternoon up and down some steep hills, clay bank etc. So will see if they do it then.

Yes it's a big sigh of relief when it's fixed. It was the wife who bought the Hippo but now she doesn't want it. I didn't want it at first but now I love it! Haha. But I already have two Audi's and a Saab. So the wife wants to sell the Hippo. :-/
