Hi All,

As i'm sure your aware i'm a newbie on here.

I have loved Landrovers for years and the closest i have so far came to owning one was my old mans Disco about ten years ago which i promptly destroyed whlist fishing one one day.

So after many moons, I have decided to purchase one myself. Albeit a Freelander.

What I am after is a bit of advice on how to spot a wrongern! I know there are many around.

I have been looking at 2001 to 2002 plate TD4 GS and ES SW and all that I have looked at have seemed OK apart from a couple had swimming pools in the boot (which I have not seen on the extra's list when they were built).

Any advice on what to look for and what to look OUT for would me much appreciated.

Thanks
Nathan

Do a search for each of the following - VCU, IRD, MAF, 3 Amigos. Injectors are approx. £150 each if they fail, Crank & Cam sensors fail, Low pressure fuel pump £150 fails, any knocking from the rear is usually various bushes etc. around the rear axle.
Crankcase breather valve/filter assy must be changed every 12,000 miles or turbo will fail. Intercooler hoses fail but are very cheap to replace. Do all other checks as per any vehicle & try to get the best warranty possible. Cars are good apart from these known areas which regular servicing & checks will hopefully avoid. Remember, all cars have their problems & the Td4 is no better or worse than most of them. Avoid the petrol engined models & you are off to a better start.

Sounds like a list to put you off......

Problem is I've loved them for ages so this is just a minor problem.

Many thanks for the advice.

Dunt let that list put you orf, if you really want a freelander go an git one. every car goes wrong at sum point in it's life and can be spensive to repair  . but with a good look around an follow good advice from this ere forum, but not the tratter boys :behindsofa: ,..... all can be sweet. i'm on my second one goin 'up' from petrol to a td4 { good move}.
good luck an happy huntin................:) ..........:welcome:

Ah soo right - its mechanical and has landrover written on it.....

Sorry but myTD4 has its faults all correctable with advice from here :blabla:

Service it regularly, avoid cheapo filters as they let too much cr@p past, repair and replace things going wrong and you'll have a good time!

As a start I would get yourself a bench mark (as I did), treat any service history as rubbish, replace all the fluids - gear oil, IRD oil, engine oil, coolant, brake fluid. Top up final drive. Check PAS fluid and clutch fluid levels - change the crankcase breather and air filter, fuel filter and then you'll at least know where to continue from.

There will always be something new to challenge you but thats half the fun - i had a Lexus IS200 before the TD4 and the one i prefer to drive is bigger, dirtier, slower, noisier, stinks of diesel - in other words flamin magic!!!!

Go fer the 2002 as i think that is when the Ird ratios were changed. . . .most of the problems on td4 engine and car have been documented in this ear forum so do sum trawling in search and other parts. . . . .fine motor td4 un old series. . . . .:) :) :)

Well said Ming - theres a check for the drive ratios. Bobbing along at 70mph check the rev counter (in 5th) at 3000 or less = new ratio, 3500 or so = old ratio!

I read that on ere somewhere i think n its right as I know...I changed my rear diff!
