Hi

My Freelander is making a strange noise a light winding screaching sound ( difficult to describe not a metalic sound )when I turn around a corner , it seems to be coming from the underside middle to the rear , not from the front so I have disscounted anything to do with the steering or front drive joints etc , has anyone got any idea as to what it could be , I was thinking about that joint in the middle of prop shaft near the support bearing is that some sort of compensator ! .

cheers

best thing to do it remove the prop and vcu and see how it drives then

ashcroft engineering is the best place to get a replacement vcu if u find that is faulty

if the vcu is faulty and u leave it on the car will cause extensive damage to the ird and rear diff

as the other guys have said do a search on here for vcu as there is an extensive write up

Look in the Freelander forum / how to, there's a thread by Hippo on vcu bearing replacement. This will give you a good idea on removing all the relevant parts. He's also done a thread on the vcu, but I can't find it at the mo.
It's really straight forward if you take your time and have a mate with you and follow all the points about lining all the parts up and marking the splines etc so it all goes back on correctly.
If you are unsure on any points after reading all the threads and maybe asking more questions, give it to a 4x4 specialist to do.

Ashcroft are transmission specialists. Great for new gearbox.

Bell Engineering is the recommended by most people VCU supplier.

arnt i doing well, sorry about that, the old memory box is fried already, lol

Ashcroft transmissions sell brand new genuine vcu's (not reconditioned) as well as other recondition parts like gear boxes and diff's. They also sell some parts as new too like ird's. They can convert a tratter to auto gearbox anorl.
