Tapping noise

hi all

This place seems to be my new home of late. Yet another problem with my TD4.
I'm getting an intermittent fast tapping noise from what sounds like the left when i'm either accelerating or slowing. It won't happen on idle when i rev up as far as 4000rpm either with a gradual rev climb or a rapid one. No smoke,drop in power and the turbo can be heard spooling normally.Checked the oil too and all is well.

Might not be engine related then. Check track rod ends, drop links etc. If they all look fine then go back to the engine.

its seems very rapid though to be something suspension related. if it was engine related shouldn't i be able to hear it at reving on idle?

Reving at idle doesn't put any real load on the turbo.
Hopefully someone with similar probs may be able to pin point it.

Not heard a turbo tap. Whine yes, scream yes but tap no. Could be a multitude of things. Cam follower or injector for instance.

Injectors are all new .it drives fine which is strange .it seems low down as in not top end related .question though . I fitted a cheap low pressure pump a few weeks ago trying to rule stuff out for a different issue .itwould never be that dying and the sound just echoing with the window open ? do they start to tap or knock when they are dying

Highly doubtful, never heard of one making that type of noise.
Out of interest have you changed the turbo vent filter lately?

vacuum pump be on the left-top ( nearside u'k. - 'left' from in-cab ))
don't know if that would tap .. be connected to the camshaft i think

Right so it's got to pretty much continuous now .is there any chance it could be just a heat shield ?

Was in the garage yesterday evening and he thinks its coming somewhere from the propshaft.Whta on there could have a metallic tapping?

Vcu support bearings?
Give them a good tug and push, if they move about 3mm they need replacing.

hi all. so while i was away the mechanic took off the propshaft and all is quiet now. so is the likely cause bearings?the vcu wouldn't tap if it was fialling would it?

Defo bearings. Vcu doesn't click.
