Default Should I/shouldn't I?

Hi all

Having been a previous 90TD owner some years ago, i'm hoping to rejoin the LR fold with a Freelander, though having trawled the threads it would appear i may be insane...

So, been offered a '99 XEDi 5 door by a mechanic mate (his late father's), 31k (yes really) FSH, great condition, recalls done, for £2500.

Should I:

a) snap his hand off like i'm tempted to
b) spend more on a newer TD4
c) by something Japanese!

And can anyone enlighten me on the specifics of the inherant IRD/VCU problems - i know they die, but how? Can it be prevented?

Many thanks

Ed - new and hopefully long lasting member

BUT the 1999 xedi will still be LOW tax, and is a VERY VERY good choice!

Yep, forget the other halfwit replies, Ste220 makes a good point & even though I love the Td4, you won't get one with 31,000 miles for anywhere near that price.
The IRD usuall fails because the VCU seizes, so keep regular checks on it & you'll be ok. Do a search on here & use either the tippex method or the jack up & turn the rear wheel method (handbrake off - should turn but feel tight as if the brakes are half on).
Roverron also sells a tuning box for this model for around £60 which boosts power from 98bhp to 120bhp which will give you slightly better performance than a standard Td4.
Good Luck.

Nice one chaps - just needed my arm twisting a teeny bit! Tuning up for £60 sounds good too, had briefly looked into this and thought it would be nearer £500!

And yes, the "should i buy something Japanese instead" was a wind-up - didn't have to wait long for a bite did I? lol
