already done. I only have it on the air setting at the moment. When I put the map on it smokes even more. Probably compounding the underlying problem.
 
You tried running without the tuning box switched on at all?

The tuning box exaggerates ANY problems I found. Took me 6 months to sort mine out. It was the injectors in my case causing the smoking.
 
Yep, done that as well. The technician said that it is not the injectors.It was hooked up to landrover diagnostics and it only picked up the MAF and fuel pressure sensor.
 
just been speaking to Rover Ron, great bloke and very helpful. He suggested that it is not a fuel issue i.e over fueling but an air issue i.e lack of air to burn the fuel. He suggested that I check the turbo boost actuator wires(where is this) and check the turbo boost pressure. Any idea how to do this and where on the engine am i looking?

Turbo boost actuator is under neath the car. Under the driver foot well area. It's attached to the turbo. If you're ever near Ampleforth, I have an obd tool to check boost pressure. My Td4 spikes to 18.8psi then drops to 17psi in third gear on beacon bank. Just message me on here if you want to see what boost pressure you're achieving. That may give you a better idea of where to look.

cheers for the offer, I might just take you up on that as I am only 1/2 hour from you. Thanks for letting me know where the actuator is, I will have a poke around tomorrow. This problem is really annoying me now, I cannot believe that a Landrover specialist cannot find the issue.

But are they a Freelander specialist - quite different!!!!
 
sorry to hear of your woes

can i suggest that you actually completely disconnect the synergy box and see how it runs.

that way you can maybe see if there is a fundamental problem with the car.
It may also let you find any bad connections in the synergy connections that could be contributing to your problem.

yep, already done that to. Got a brand new Bosch MAF, disconnected the synergy so everything was back to original. It ran like a bag of spanners, just like when the MAF is shot. Put my Piersburg MAF and synergy back on and it runs sweet as a nut but still had the black smoke. When the Bosch MAF didnt work I thought that it was the MAF plug at fault do Rover Ron pointed out that that cant be the case as my Piersburg MAF and synergy box would not work.

There is a turbo hose off the turbo too, has that been checked for splits or collapse internally? You can see the actuator rod from drivers side wheel arch. Put wheels in full left lock look through a rear side of the arch with a torch. You will see the solenoid valve then the top of the rod just above that. Get someone to start the car and it should move slightly. Then get them to blip the throttle and the rod should move. They only move circa 10mm travel when working properly.

Your truck looks smart by the way.

maybe you should check the boost pressure - if you are short of air this will show it up - any simple OBD ready should let you monitor boost pressure.

you will have to do it on the road though - full right foot in 2nd or 3rd should give max boost
forget now what is max boost pressure but somebody here will know or maybe its in RAVE ????

That's what I am going to look at tonight. Thanks for the comment on the truck. Its the first 4x4 that i've owned and other than this issue, I love it.

Hi digby,yes I did put on a new fuel pressure sensor also fitted the overlay harness for good measure. It made a slight improvement but nothing to write home about.
 
I would certainly be looking at the boost pressure, low pressure will cause it to smoke, it could even be a blockage in the exhaust not letting the turbo spool up properly.
