Mechanics I spoke to said two things about VCU bearings:

(a) There are three sorts. LR genuine, very expensive, and totally OK. Ebay cheapos which simply go in 100 miles ,and reputable cheapish ones (£30 or so IIRC) which actually last as well as the genuine. I cant remember which they are tho.

(b) the VCU bearings have slotted holes. That means its perfectly possible to tighten em up with a twist one em, and that soon shags em. Now I dont expect people to get out a set square, but a good visual check that they are aligned correctly will save you money.

I wanted to avoid the ebay cheapo's which is why I paid £70 plus postage for ones described as genuine GKN. Now I'm having doubts if they are genuine cause they ain't marked GKN anywhere and came in a home made box.

Markings in me vcu fred. GKN from LR use vag bearings when I got mine. Others have confirmed the same over the years.

I bought INA bearings for my rav4 they were stamped GKN bearings..

Work this one out.

I bought an LUK timing belt kit, it came in INA box's and the bearings were stamped GKN

LOL, Nah, can't be arsed starting a new fred. I'll fit them and hope for the best. I know FAG are good bearings but from what I've read the rubber mounts are the bits that fail. Hopefully if the makers used good bearings then they will have used good quality materials for the rest.

They may share production lines in different countries to protect supply but also build locally to sell several brands from the same place, to reduce import costs, if what you say about them being in the same group is true.
